Boston’s leather clad, co-ed, good-time garage punk gang THE GALA (US) are set to release their debut long player, Bad News, on rock’n’roll mainstay Dead Beat Records. A fine addition to a label that boasts J CHURCH and THE DAILY VOID on it’s roster. The organ drenched back beat brings to mind a band like THE BROOD, but it’s juxtaposed by a front woman (Emily Doran), who instead of the more growly tendencies of THE BROOD, leans more heavily on a glam purr and strut that is at once intensely emotive and vulnerable. A garage rock Chrissy Amphlett or Inger Lorre.
This is their first video from the LP, called “Boy”. I’m told the song started as their trashy take on a spy movie theme or splatter platter. GALA (US) guitarist Chris Kenneally: “We’re all fans of 60’s girls groups like THE SHIRELLES and THE SHANGRI-LA’S so we incorporate various elements from that era into our slower, more groove-based tunes, but stripped down to their most raw essence. Then we just splash in some fuzz as needed!”
“Boy” was directed by John DiLoreto (from Heavy Leather Topless Dance Party). THE GALA (US) debut album Bad News will be available March 1st on Dead Beat Records. Catch them on tour around the Northeast this Spring/Summer.
