I’ve always been a sucker for early sixties soul singers like Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Solomon Burke and James Brown so the first time I heard James Hunter, I immediately thought “How could I have missed this guy?” Luckily I had it saved on my Shazam app (the greatest thing ever invented besides waffles) and to my surprise, it was not made in 1961 but in 2006. I have been a fan of some more modern R&B singers like Nikki Hill, Nick Waterhouse, JD McPherson and of course Nick Curran & Amy Winehouse but James Hunter was new to me. I am really glad I discovered him and now I can put his album on my top shelf of Rhythm & Blues with the rest.
And get Shazam.
