While driving through Western Canada one rainy night, I heard this tune as the closing song on a podcast. After the first few chords, I immediately used my “Shazam!” app on my phone to find out what it was titled. I then proceeded to play the said song nonstop all throughout the night. The song was “The Weekend” by the Dave Rawlings Band. Below is a brief story of the making of the video from the album “Nashville Obsolete” (2015, Acony Records)
Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch take a weekend road trip in the music video for their new song “The Weekend,” the opening track on the new Dave Rawlings Machine album Nashville Obsolete.
The video was shot on a breakneck road trip from Nashville to California. “It was the craziest idea” says Rawlings,”to document a weekend trip from Music City to the beach and back”. The opening scene shows Rawlngs and Welch packing up the ’65 Chevy Impala they first toured in. West- coast bound, outfitted in Nudie Suits and armed with guitars and a beach blanket, the story unfolds over the course of ‘The Weekend’. The trip is real, the breakdown is real, the mechanic is real, unplanned, but evidence that Dave Rawlings Machine will go wherever the road leads them.
Directed by Reid Long.
The album features David Rawlings, Gillian Welch, Willie Watson (formerly of Old Crow Medicine Show), Paul Kowert (of the Punch Brothers), Brittany Haas and Jordan Tice.
