Venus follow up the success of their debut single, “Deranged” with “Sour”, a diatribe against those who pre-judge and reject others.
Whilst the vitriol is still there and “Sour” has the same aural aesthetic as Deranged, it is more melodic and restrained. Grace’s vocals are less shouty and highlight what she is really capable of. We have the same synth-laden sound and some neat guitar work. A chugging riff drives the song forward and demands a repeat play. Catchy ? Maybe so. I’m not sure I expected to be saying that about a Venus track. More than anything, this track shows that the band are far from one-dimensional. If they can keep this diversity in their songs, their next few releases and ultimate debut album will be something special. Expect the unexpected with this band but don’t be surprised when they start really making waves. I expect airplay for “Sour”. I also expect a riotous launch gig at Leeds’ Wardrobe on Friday 7 June.
Lead singer, Grace, describes Sour “as the aggravation derived from shallow characters pre-conceptually generalising or judging you, and mistakenly thinking they’ve ‘figured you out’. If you’re someone who has been alienated, demonised or simply bullied for being who you are, I hope this song gives you some comfort. But a big thank you, to the perpetrators who inspired us to write this song, I hope you listen.” Keep pissing this band off and they’ll keep writing about you !!
