TOO BROKE FOR BANDCAMP is a new column I’m doing where I compile some noteworthy releases on bandcamp that are either FREE (name your price), or VERY VERY CHEAP (nothing over a buck or two). It’s good praxis to pay something if you have it and want to support the artist. Artists labor is not free!☭ Sometimes we are simply too damn broke. That’s okay! In this case make sure to sign up for the mailing list when you download, and consider sharing on social media! It’s also beneficial for an artist to have their release pop up on your bandcamp download page for other people to discover. If the artist has other releases that are not free, maybe you’ll purchase those at some point as well.
BECKY & THE POLITICIANS “JACKIE AND JUDY” (Name Your Price)
Synth Punk covers of punk hits from RAMONES, WIRE, & THE ORCHIDS. From Portland! They have morphed into the band DRESS FORMS.
HOOD RATS “TOO BROKE FOR JUSTICE” (Name Your Price)
So I lifted the name of the column from this lo fi punk banger from Montreal’s HOOD RATS first self released full length demo tape, Digital Wasteland. I’ve actually requested it be re-recorded for their follow up to Trash Party (GIRLSVILLE), so I’m hoping that happens. The tune rips and you can hear and relate to it in all it’s anthemic promise and glory. HOOD RATS are set to begin their tour of the Northeastern US on Thursday March 21st in Boston with ANDY CALIFORNIA and STICKER SHOCK.
B. SPANKS “FIXATION” (Name Your Price)
B. SPANKS is Ben Nightingale who is involved in some of the great stuff that’s come from Falmouth, UK over the last several years like THE SPANKEES and M. RUTT (with his pal Charlie Murphy). B. SPANKS have got a self titled cassette out on the great FUZZKILL RECORDS as well. “Fixation” is taken from a brand new live release recorded directly to tape. It’s called Live at Green Door Store 12.01.19, and I have to say I prefer it to the proper studio recordings. It ranges from raucous garage punk to sort of KINKS-ish type fair like “Burst Balloon”. “Fixation” has a strong COACHWHIPS vibe to it. The whole thing was recorded live to cassette via a Panasonic RQ-L309.
MR. AND THE MRS. “ULTRA VIOLENCE” (Name Your Price)
Kansas garage punk duo have turned in a brand spankin new full length called Look Ma’ No Microphone. The concept for this album is that it’s all instrumentals. “Ultra Violence” kicks up a dirty Detroit rock n roll feel Ala THE GORIES meets MC5. This bands politics are also really good which elevates the experience for me. There are weird, far out, and brilliant bits all over Look Ma’ No Microphone, and Kansas is lucky to have this band playing its dives and basements.
KRIMEWATCH “小便 たれ” ($1.00)
Mostly femme NYHC band (the guitarist, Sean Joyce (AJAX) being the exception) with a Japanese frontwoman (Rhylli Ogiura), whose live delivery is energetic and hip hop influenced. Perhaps everyone has this one by now, but if you don’t it’s only one dollar.
PRODUCT LUST “ACT OF DISRUPT” (Name Your Price)
Denver punk band with a range of influences (Hardcore/Surf/Goth) that combine together in a pretty dangerous sounding cocktail of noise, like a more unhinged and even meaner version of Perth, Australia’s COLD MEAT.
THE BUZZARDS “BROKEN HANDS” (Name Your Price)
Detroit’s THE BUZZARDS feature Joe Burdick (THE DIRTYS) on bass and vocals, Maribel Restepo (DETROIT COBRAS) on lead guitar, and twins Nancy and Leslie Paterra on drums and guitar. They are my favorite band from the circa Y2K Detroit garage explosion. They feature prominently on this compilation Ghettoblaster, Volume 2. “Broken Hands” is exclusive to the comp and the version of their tune “You Got Me Down” is different than the single version. I think all the bands recorded live at a Brewery in Detroit for this comp. Other bands on this name your price comp: BANTAM ROOSTER, THE DIRTBOMBS, THE HENTCHMEN.
CANDY HIGHWAY “MAD GLAD BLAH” (Name Your Price)
CANDY HIGHWAY were from London and they kind of morphed into the band VIRVON VARVON. Features members of BLACK TIME. It’s a real belter of a track with angry femme vox. I comped em on the first thing I ever put out on GIRLSVILLE which was the compilation Stupid Punk Boy. The whole comp is now name your price on bandcamp. There is great stuff on the comp from COACHWHIPS, ABJECTS, COMMISERATIONS, and the aforementioned BLACK TIME and VIRVON VARVON.
