THE SUEVES PREMIERE NEW VIDEO FOR “NEVER BEEN TO THE BEACH” (HOZAC RECORDS)

Back in March we had the pleasure of premiering an absolute banger that I hand plucked from the new LP by Chicago’s The Sueves. HoZac Records Todd Novak had sent me an advanced copy of it while he was making the rounds to the fanzines and blogs. I zeroed in on a cut called “Never Been To The Beach”:

“The Sueves are not peddlers of fashion conscious psych rock or beachy pizza punk, so I think they’ve been underrated in the current climate. If they veer into surfy stuff it’s damaged, bleak, and an ultimately Midwestern take, which brings us to “Never Been To The Beach”. This is a stab at some haunted surf punk, but it’s a tense and venomous statement.”

Since that March premiere, I have moved across the country to Oregon. I have been on hiatus from my writing gig, but Todd asked me if I’d like premiere the video for “Never Been To The Beach”, and I didn’t want to pass it up. I’m writing to you all in 100 degree heat (no one told me about this part of Oregon life), with my computer sitting on top of heaps of boxes, and my own record player is not even set up yet. Also, I may have forgotten how to write altogether. What I haven’t forgotten is how to hone in on a choice bop from a new LP, and this my friends is the first of many on this new Sueves record.

You know who is a big fan of The Sueves? Kurt Bloch. That’s something that I think you all should know going into this. You know you’re in a good fucking band when Kurt Bloch likes it.

I asked Sueves frontman Joe Schorgl to tell us a bit about the concept and filming of “Never Been To The Beach”. He tells us, “I’ve never made a music video, so I just started shooting footage when I was out and about, or out of town with the band. The very first shot is one of my favorites, and was filmed by (Sueves bassist) Rob. He hit record on his phone and threw it in the air on slo-mo mode. We were at our friends home studio called Rose Raft in Southern Illinois. It’s run and inhabited by the 2 most legitimate artists we know, Phil & Jessee aka The Funs. Phil recorded our new LP RIP Clearance Event there. He also recorded our first record Change Your Life there too.”

Aside from the various shots around Chicago (and the Midwest in general), Schorgl revealed to us that there are also visions of gelatin island beaches, and shocking and depraved graveyard shenanigans! Check it out! And go scoop up the new Sueves LP, R.I.P. Clearance Event, out now on HoZac Records! And for you completists out there, The Sueves also have a new 7″ single worth hunting down on Italian label Goodbye Boozy.
