The Kinda Band You’ve Never Heard Before…….. Meet, Lunch

lunchusethis

This interview comes from our good friends at Very Gun Records. I would say Lunch is a whole lot of sounds all coming together to make something new, not just punk, not just garage and I suppose that then becomes post. I especially dig the vocals, reminds me a little of Jim Carroll and the slide guitar playing is very cool. Overall , Lunch have a different kind of vibe going on, they would make a great opening act for Ty Segall, and that’s some pretty cool company.

Hi our name is….

Really hard to Google. Also, we are called Lunch.

And our sound might be best described as….

Dark post-garage-pop-jangle-punk. We wish we were a goth band though.

We are…

Bad at submitting information for interviews in timely manor. Also:

Prometheus Wolf – Vocals/Guitar

Matthew Huffman – Drums

DJ Barnes – Guitar

Jared Bird – Bass

We are originally from…..

The home of Huell Howser’s hit tv show, California, or as Huell would put it, “WOW, is that dog eating AVO-CADOS? THAT”S AMAZIN'”.

More specifically we are all from an area outside sacramento and we have known each other forever. We all ended up in Portland many years ago on somehow…

Who are some that have an influence on your sound??

Huell Howser. Behind that it’s prorabaly going to be The Gun Club, The Cure, The Wipers, The Chameleons, The Birthday Party, Echo & The Bunnymen, UK Decay, The Modern Lovers, The Virgin Prunes, The Gories, and Rancid. Well, that last one is probably more of a spiritual influence.

The first time we met was…..

A long time ago. Matt, DJ, and Prometheus all went to the same high school. DJ and Prometheus used to play grindcore and noise music together in people’s garages when they were teenagers. Matt and Jared went to hardcore shows. Jared is from the sticks and played bluegrass with Matt’s current roomate when they were younger. Everyone from that part of northern California lives here in Portland now. All of them. It’s crazy.

We knew we were going to be a Band when………

We realized we had made poor life decisions and had nothing else we knew how to to do.

Before starting the band we were employed as…….

Wait, what? We are definitely still working regular jobs. We aren’t Nickelback… Prometheus and DJ work in offices, Matt developes photos, and Jared is a display manager at a grocery store. When this interview publishes though, we are planning on leaving formal work behind to tour the cassino circuit full time.

Our craziest gig ever was….

The time we almost opened for Tav Falco here in Portland and it was ruined by the city of Seattle. We hate Seattle.

Second place was probably when we played at this bar in San Clemente that was straight up inside a strip mall. Someone got kicked out immediately for drunkenly trying to throw a bowl of salsa through the front window. Said dude later snuck in to the show wearing a dress and a wig and proceded to play drums for the headliner. Everyone danced and went crazy and there were feminine hygene products covering the floor. Colin From Terminal A and Prometheus were competing for biggest eyebrows and best makeup. Colin won when he included blood. Later that night we drank too many beers in our friend’s parent’s garage and Jared did a drunken Elvis impression that changed the band forever.

The first song we wrote was…….

Probably terrible. We are still trying to recover.

It’s about……

Lipstick.

What tunes are you currently jamming to…

Prometheus: Lots of John Prine, Waylon Jennings, Sad Lovers & Giants, Modern English “Mesh & Lace”, Eyeless in Gaza (tons of Cherry Red stuff in general), Trop Tard, 13th Chime, that new Total Control Record, Orange Juice, Shadowhouse (favorite local band), and way too much Cure. I was gonna also put Mode Moderne on my list (I dug up that “Ghosts Emerging” album from a couple years back and have been listening to the shit out of it lately) but then I saw Shane from Shadowhouse dropped them in his list already and I don’t wan’t to look like a stupid asshole. Thanks Shane. You ruined my whole list(life?) probably.

Matthew: Billy Bragg “Life’s a Riot With Spy vs. Spy”, The Cure “Faith”, Vex “Sanctuary”, The Estranged “S/T”, Peace “The World is Too Much With Us”.

DJ: Wire “154”, Echo & the Bunnymen “Crocodiles”, and Dead Boys “We Have Come For Your Children”.

Jared: The Rolling Stones, Daniel Romano, and Morrissey.

What are some of the 1st songs you remember listening to that made you say, that’s what I want to do.

Prometheus: Whatever the first punk song I ever heard was. No idea. Probably something by MXPX. My made up answer would involve Nick Cave and bubble bath.

Matt: “Bonzo Goes to Bitsburg” by the Ramones and “Lost in the Supermarket” by the Clash.

Jared: The Ramones “I wanna be Sedated”.

DJ: Blink 182 “Dammit”.

When you’re touring and have some time off, where could we find you..,.,

Driving around in the van while blasing Randy Newman and looking frantically for a place to buy beer.

The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us

You could be listening to Randy Newman right now… Also, we love you.
