The Glitter Punk Love Child of Alice Cooper & Joan Jett , Meet…Scary Cherry and the Bang Bangs

scarypic

It’s Friday and it’s time to rock your weekend. Scary Cherry and the Bang Bangs are playing the kind of rock , I grew up on (70’s) . It is not watered down typical stuff you hear every day. It is , to me Joan Jett inspired fueled by a little tougher sound, and that is never a bad thing. There are enough new elements thrown in for fun , like the ghost cat, Gurgles and the entire ” I Cut Off Your Head” song. One thing I know for sure, if you like good old Rock N Roll, Scary Cherry and The Bang Bangs may just be the Band you have been looking for. Very cool, powerful rock, guitar driven and backed by a voice that knows what rock n roll is….

All answers will come from our ghost cat, Gurgles

Hi our name is….

Scary Cherry and the Bang Bangs (SCABBS, for short) is the bands name and I am Gurgles the (ghost) Cat. I will answer all questions. Thank you!

People say we sound like…..

SCABBS hardcore fans in the UK refer to the band (and themselves) as Glitterpunks. It is an amalgamation of sounds but mainly a cross between 70’s style punk and 70’s style glitter rock. Throw in some theatrics you have SCABBS. A reviewer once said the band is “the glitterpunk love child of Joan Jett and Alice Cooper” and I’d say that’s a fair assessment.

We are…

Scary Cherry (lead vox), Minx the Jinx (guitar 1, vox), Alan Mallets (drums/FX), Novacraig (guitar 2), Robadalah (bass) with Baby Tay and Ashilee on backing vox.

We are originally from…..

Mainly Texas. Minx the Jinx is from Los Angeles. We are based in Dallas. I live in a Pet Cemetary.

Who are some that have an influence on your sound??

It’s different for different band members. But I would say anything from The Ramones to David Bowie and a lot in between!

The first time we…

Voted? Never. Had an orgy? After every show. Won an Independent Music Award for Best Rock Song (Don’t Wanna)? OK, that last one is real.

Books we recommend …

Any and everything that has even been banned!

Can you tell us about the process you use, from writing the songs all the way through getting the album ready?

The main song writing comes from Scary and Minx the Jinx (who apparently gets his best ideas when driving). They then beat each other up for a few months vying for songwriting dominance! Haha. In reality, once the idea starts they immediately start a preproduction process at La Casa Bang Bang (their home studio) running Logic Pro and using various guitars, basses, keys, etc. Many times what was recorded at home ends up in the final cut. In fact, a majority of the vocals that ended up and both the “Girl” LP and the (generically titled) “Limited Edition 5 EP” were also cut at home, good mic’s help!

Our craziest gig ever was….

Well, being a ghost cat has it’s advantages as I can go anywhere, so I’ve been to all of SCABBS gigs. What would constitute being denoted as “the craziest gig” is difficult to say! The band was once involved in a pretty good brawl at a club in Cincinnati, OH. After all was said and done we all kissed and made up! They were done pretty tough guys though. When we were leaving they showed us their arsenal of weapons and basically said “It’s a good thing that you guys were good…”. Good times. Another time (same tour), the band were invited to spend (what they thought would be a peaceful) night at a club owners home in Salina, KS. But noooooo! Instead, what happened is this; after the show the the entire crowd showed up at the house and began a meth fueled orgy – and I do mean orgy (the band, for the record, does not do drugs). There is not a lot to do in Salina I guess! Another time the band were opening for Slash and Megadeath at big outdoor show festival – in the middle of peak summer heat. Somebody had a brilliant idea to paint the stage black which just absorbed all of the heat. It was so bad that their shoes were melting – literally! Talk about a hot foot!

If you could pick any time to travel back to for music, where would you go and what year would it be….

That’s a tough one! Would it be The Beatles at The Cavern Club, circa 1962 or Bowie doing Ziggy Stardust circa1972 or T.Rex (same year)? Ramones at CBGB’s first gig August ’74? Too many. Shit! Lou Reed! Stooges! Pistols! Thunders! The original run of Rocky Horror Show! 70’s is the decade anyways!

Growing up ,at home we listened to…..

Everything we could get our hands on!

What tunes are on heavy rotation for you…

X

Don’t Wanna” has been charting since Oct of 2013 and the title track “Girl” as well. This has had the added effect of making people go back to 2010 EP which is getting airplay again (thank you very much).

If you could open for any Band right now who would that be and why?

Oh boy, you do ask the tough questions! SCABBS love so many bands! Hmm… I’m going to go with Muse as it would be a lot of fun to watch them night after night!

If you could give any advise to the kids who are just picking up their 1st guitars or drum sets and want to be in a rock n roll band , what’s your advise?

Thus question comes up a lot in interviews and the typical “practice hard” statement seems kind of lame. The reality is this: It is hard and even if you are AMAZING you may never make one fucking penny, but it is the best shitty job you’ll ever have! SCABBS would like to salute all of the weekend warriors in the world! The musicians that never made it but still live the dream!

When you are touring and have some time off , where could we find you..,.,

Looking for healthy food or sleeping! Occasionally we have enough time to do a bit of sight seeing, but not much!

The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us

We’re still wondering if anybody has figured out what the secret is on the song “The Secret, Frankie?” If somebody does, send the band a Facebook message and we’ll send you something!
