Last Fall we introduced you to Falmouth synth punk trio M.RUTT, and the sprawling MONITOR SHOCKS concept their EP release was an installment of.
“MONITOR SHOCKS is a project comprised of comics, different music personas, and writing. Often depicting some sort of non-present, as well as the effect of people interacting with soft devices, i.e screens, phones, etc. A coherent narrative thread won’t always be present, but the themes mentioned will be there, under the surface.”
(MONITOR SHOCKS)
There have been two more PINK BRICKS comic installments since that EP premiere, making this SPLIT FRICTION video the fourth installment of MONITOR SHOCKS.
SPLIT FRICTION has a squelchy, synthy, dystopian, future-punk sound. It’s made entirely with synths and Charlie Murphy’s (RED CORDS/FREAK GENES) vocal. He did everything on this one. Charlie tells us that James Tiptree Jr. and FAD GADGET were big influences, in particular the pacing of James Tiptree Jr.’s short stories.
The video is a collaboration with Lewis Allen, who is from the same small town in Cornwall as Murphy. Murphy tells us, “he had a lot of footage of the ocean from a surfing trip he’d taken which he thought would work as a good backbone, then he went round my house taking videos of electrical appliances to cut in with it. We didn’t want anything too literal.”
We will have more from SPLIT FRICTION in the days and weeks to come. We’ll take a deeper dive into the concept of these installments, we’ll talk a bit more with Charlie Murphy. We’ll also be premiering the full length, (which is very, very good).
