Soul Sunday: Eddie Floyd – “Knock On Wood”

Eddie Lee Floyd (born June 25, 1937 in Montgomery, AL) was a founding member of the Falcons, along with Mack Rice (in 1960 Wilson Pickett would also join). In 1965 Floyd signed with Stax Records, where he met Steve Cropper. They wrote “Knock On Wood” (originally intended for Otis Redding) and Floyd’s version went to #1 on the Soul Singles chart in 1966. The song earned Gold certification on July 17th, 1995.

(David Bowie recorded a live version as a single in the UK in 1974).
