Beat Mark portraits by Richard Gray

Beat Mark are one of a few French bands to strike with the noisy pop spirit of contemporary U.S. music (from MGMT to Dum Dum Girls), who don’t hide their mid-80s to mid-90s English influences. Their sound has been described as nuggets of The Vaselines, and The Television Personalities with a few drops of The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Stone Roses and Primal Scream. Some have even evoked My Bloody Valentine. Whatever the mix, the 2 boys and 2 girls of Beat Mark from Paris have created a full-length album that has a raw and instantly refreshing new sound. Who would have thought the French could be so chic hot! (From ….Ample Play

Very cool stuff , look forward to the new music later this year….

Hi our name is….

And our sound might be best described as….

“I can hear the flowers bloom and something roar”

We are…

Chloé (drums), Gaëtan (guitar+vocals), Jérôme (guitar), Julien (lead vocals+keyboard), Karin (vocals+keyboard)

We are originally from…..

Bordeaux France for the most part, Karin is a real Parisian brunette though

The first time we met was…..

Julien and Gaëtan met in Junior School, became best friends and listened to heavy metal. They also wrote poems. They got bullied in the school yard. Jérôme and Chloé bumped into each other in between shows and various record stores. Chloé met Julien and Gaëtan in some Bordeaux basement and shared the same passion for about everything, including red wine. We met Karin when we moved to Paris.

We knew we were going to be a Band when………

other ones left and we stayed

Before starting the band we were employed as…….

tax-paying citizens or about to be so trying to escape their condition. We still are.

The first song we wrote was…….

It’s about……

trying to walk into the sun while crawling in the sand

What we are currently listening to….

with the 5 of us it would be William Onyeabor and lots of Nigerian bands, Nikki Sudden and the Jacobites, Can, Townes Van Zandt, Alkibar Gignor, Kelley Stoltz, Toy, the Oscillation, Robert Ashley (just passed away), Crash Normal, Mississippi Records tape series, Cate Le Bon, Metronomy, Caetano Veloso and lots of Brazilian music, Felt, Growlers, Karen Dalton

Our craziest gig ever was….

at la Cantine de Belleville in Paris a few years ago when some hip kids mistook us for a garage band while we just played loud and fast.

A few Albums we can’t be without….

pretty much all the Velvet Underground ones, all the Spacemen 3, Galaxie 500, Suicide, Smiths and Felt, The Cure “Faith”, the first B52’s, Dinosaur Jr “Dinosaur”, “You’re Living All Over Me” and “Bug”, Neil Young “On The Beach”

For fun we like to…..

wear shorts at bbq’s, beat personal apnea records in the bathtub, get dressed up in toothpaste costumes

The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us……

true love was involved

new recordings in the summer and a new LP hopefully for next year!

From us in 2014
