Roxanne Shante – “Payback” (Pop Art Records 1987) – Record of the Day

This is my second RotD for Roxanne Shante, and I found out yesterday her biopic was a big hit at Sundance and is coming out on Netflix and i’m really excited about it. I’ve written about her before if you’d like a little background, but I’m going to talk about her influence on me and my label Girlsville.

I draw a lot of influence from Shante and Pop Art Records and Cold Chillin’ Records and Marley Marl, MC Lyte and a lot of this era of Hip Hop. My label logo is like a riff on the Cold Chillin’ logo. I love how lo-fi and raw these records sound. I love drawing influence from disparate, seemingly unrelated sources and not being beholden to genre, while still attempting to maintain a cohesive aesthetic.

Here’s your record of the day from 1987 on Pop Art Records it’s Roxanne Shante and “Payback”.
