I think all bands should be given the time to forge their own identity before we compare them to this or that , The Britanys are a new American Band out of NYC , they are tearing it up and it won’t be long till they are the talk of the town. With that comes the writers who peg them into a box but like I’ve been saying for years, music belongs to the kids and they could give a shit about comparisons all they hear is how cool this sounds and that’s all you need to get lost in the magic of rock ‘n’ roll …dig
Meet – The Britanys
for those unfamiliar with your bands history, can you tell us all how you all met up and decided to start a band ?
Me and Steele met in school, we shared the same dorm our Freshman year. He was roommates with a bass player, Gabe, and we started to play as a three-piece..mostly for fun, whatever bill we could get on…there was a music room in the basement of our dorm meant for the jazz kids, we’d borrow amps and tape a mic to the ceiling to practice. It wasn’t till September of last year when Jake joined that we started ‘going for it’.
who would you list as your musical influence?.
At the momentttt..Billie Holiday.
whats the coolest thing that’s happened to you as a band since you started up?
Guess.. playing Bowery Ballroom. Landing that show was the first sort of proof that we could actually ‘do it’. But umm, you could add working with Gordon Raphael, selling out Baby’s and then being able to work with Jonathan Schenke on our EP..being able to be in a studio, with a producer of that caliber and doing it from start to finish was pretty cool.
what are your hopes and dreams as a band for the next few years.
Get the EP out..support some tours..get out an album..headline some tours..just climb the latter i suppose.
what are some of your favorite albums from the past few years?
I would say probably Alas Salvation by Yak, Sunbathing Animal/Human Performance by Parquet Courts, something along those lines.
Do you see any real use for social media , or is it all just a pain in the ass to keep with?
Just a necessary evil i guess. Time consuming to think about or have to do, but we’re not really at a point to go either way..guess you can say we’re lucky that we’re young enough to understand it, just kind of a part of life..but if it were a different time where social media wasn’t the norm i couldn’t say we’d use it. it’ll be exciting when we’re at the point where we can utilize it in some interesting ways.
Do you pay attention to reviews or comments from people about your music or do you just turn that noise off.
I’d say right now we all read them, but it doesn’t sued us in anyway. Its nice to know that people have an opinion on what we’re doing rather than radio silence.
If you could tour anywhere in the world, where would you want to go.
Think we’re all really looking forward to do something in the UK. Guess its the classic ideal that kids there care about singles and bands..at least thats what we’ve heard. Everything there is a little closer/ faster to get around as well if driving. Steele also has a recent affinity for British culture..food..music..language..Arsenal. So yeah, guess I’d say at this point in time, a UK tour.
Can music save the mortal soul or is just a good backbeat to your life.
It’s definitely the thing in my life i couldn’t live without..the sort of thing where if I don’t play a certain day for any particular reason I get a little aggravated and moody..withdrawals i suppose.
Any last thoughts for your fans?
thank you for participating, even for a second, in this little world we’re trying to build.
