Buffy Sainte-Marie is a Canadian activist, focusing on Native Americans’ struggles since the 60s, and she’s also an incredible folk musician, as evidenced on her 1968 release I’m Gonna Be A Country Girl Again, among her other also-stellar records. Her songs, whether they’re socially empowering statement songs or sweet love songs, all have a down-home feel, comforting while still inspiring.

Her protest songs are powerful, where Buffy’s strong words serve as a voice for a population that’s been largely silenced by history.

I’m Gonna Be A Country Girl again is a great mix of the two: the sweet and soulful tunes, where Buffy’s haunting vibrato tugs at your heartstrings, and the message songs that make you angry at the past, but hopeful for a better future.
