Ready To Rock You, from Holland…….Meet,Tarzan’s My Daddy

tarzanmain

Today we bring you Tarzan’s My Daddy. All the way from Holland, these two will rock you. After listening to them a few times they remind me of Jefferson Airplane. I don’t even know if they have ever listened to Grace Slick but the vocals and sound take me back to the early days of the Airplane. They bring some classic rock sounds into the mix, a little heavier then some of the Bands coming out of the West Coast USA. Tarzan’s My Daddy are tight ,they know the game and how to pound out some cool ass rock. I’ve included their EP because it’s all so good , you would be asking for more. Give a listen and get ready to move….

Hi our name is …..Tarzan’s my Daddy!

People say we sound like…….. a mixture between Incubus, Foo Fighters, The White Stripes and Fink. Also people say our drummergirl plays the drums like John Bonham and Dave Grohl and our guitarist sound like Jeff Beck on fire!

We are…… Nienke Kollias (drums/vocals) and Suzanne Jalink (guitar/vocals)

We are originally from …….The Netherlands, also known as Holland. We both live in The Hague. That’s a pretty big town for Dutch standards. Almost half a million people live here and it’s beautiful! Very green, quiet and near the ocean. What more can one want.

Who are some that have an influence on your sound?…… Right now our biggest influence is Fink and A Perfect Circle. But we also listened to a lot of other duo’s to see how they create a full and heavy sound. We love The Eagles of Deathmetal, although we don’t really sound like them. We try to create our own sound by searching for full and low drums and fully bodied guitarriffs. Suzanne also plays with an octaver, to make the guitarsound more thick.

The first time we decided to get together and make some music…… was about 5 years ago. We both studied at the Conservatory of Rotterdam. Nienke was looking for a guitarist to create an all-girl rockband with girls who could really rock! At that time we had a bassplayer. Later on she quit the band because she wanted to play jazz. We started looking for another bassplayer but decided it was probably best to continue as a duo. That worked really well,although everyone told us not to do that…..Always follow your heart!! We’ve been playing as a duo for 3 years now.

Can you tell us about the process you use, from writing the songs all the way through getting the album ready?….. Most the time Suzanne creates a guitarriff with a melody-line for vocals. We get into the rehearsal room and start jamming. The sound changes completely with heavy drums. Then we start looking for lyrics. Sometimes we write them together, but most of the time we write them privately. We both write lyrics for songs. Suzanne is more of a pop/commercial writer and Nienke is more of a poet kind of writer. If we want to records our songs it’s a whole new story. We used to just play what we always do and record those tracks in the studio (as we did for our single ‘Deal with It’). We had the idea of ‘what you see is what you get’. Now we changed that view a little and recorded separate bass and guitartracks to create a fuller sound. You can hear that change on our new upcoming single ‘Free’ which will be released half of Februari.

What are some of the obstacles you have faced as musicians and how have you overcome those?… The biggest obstacle we faced is that people have judgements before they’ve even seen us play. There’s still a prejudice about women making music here in Holland. Literally every time we perform people come up to us after the show to tell us how awesome it was and that they where really surprised. On other words….’I didn’t think it was gonna be this awesome!’. That frustrated us for a little while, but now we’re used to it. Also we get booked by bigger festivals that have seen us play elsewhere, so they know what they’re booking.

If you could pick any time to travel back to for music, where would you go and what scene would it be?… We would like to travel back into the middelages to scare the shit out of everyone.

What are some of your all time favorite Albums?…. I think that would be :
* Rage Against the Machine – Rage Against the Machine
* John Mayer – Continuum
* Alt-J – An awesome Wave
* Jose Gonzales – Stay Alive

What tunes are on heavy rotation for you?…. Right now that’s Paolo Nutini – Iron Sky. That songs gives us both the chills everytime. The emotion he puts into his vocals is extraordinary! Also the lyrics are so deep and the bridge gives us a feeling that no one can’t describe with words. If you haven’t heard it yet, check it!

If you could open for any Band right now who would that be and why?….. We would really like to open for the Foo Fighters. We think their music would suit ours and they’re probably as crazy as we are, though we’re more lovable hahaha. Also we really respected Dave Grohl when he stopped their show when he saw one of their fans got beaten up. Respect for that and love their sound!

If you could give any advise to the kids who are just picking up their 1st guitars or drum sets and want to be in a rock n roll band , what’s your advise?…. Don’t wait to get into a band until you think you’re good enough. The only way to get good is to make music together. No one became a musician by practicing in their own room. Dare to make mistakes, that’s the only way to learn!

Do you have any plans to travel to the US and what cities would you like to play?…. First we have plans to go to England and play in Brighton and other cities along the coastline. After that we really would like to do a tour in Japan. We love the US, and hopefully we will get their after our other plans. Drink a Buttweiser, eat beef jerky and visit the Dr. Phill Show 😉
