Put Down Your Dad Punk, It’s Time For The Sadists!

I caught up with The Sadists’ Siris Gwin to discuss the band’s upcoming self-titled debut LP, recent West Coast tour with Bad Sex, and to find out what’s next for one of my favorite Portland bands.

Can you tell me a little about how  you formed The Sadists and when?

I formed The Sadists back in 2016 actually, but It wasn’t till early last year that I found the right guys to play with. When I formed the band my vision and goal was to bring back what the 1970’s punk scene gave us. I was so bored at shows, all the bands sounded the same, they had no stage presence, and everyone dressed like 40-year-old has-been punk dads or ironic hipsters. Shit was boring and sad to me, I felt like the roots to all great had been snuffed out and replaced by, well SHIT. Literally, it all smelled bad and was just sitting there decomposing. We live in a very stale time and I want nothin’ to do with that taste. I had been through 3 guitar players, 2 drummers, and 1 bass player before I found the right guys to keep playing with. All talented musicians and good friends but in the end it didn’t work out, no one seemed to get it until these guys. My guitar player at the time had quit and left town, which left me heart-broken. Shit’s like breaking up with your girlfriend if not worse. So what do you do after a break up? You get shit canned and find some one else to hook up with. I went out that night to a show and grabbed the only kid I saw rocking a leather jacket. He told me he played lead guitar so I asked him one question, “what’s your favorite band from the 70’s”? His answer was “T-Rex” and I was fuckin’ sold. That’s how I met Vicious, my right hand man. Glenn, our bass player was a gift from my buddy Ray Nelson. He was helping me form the band at the time and told me he knew a kid who could play and he’s been with ever since doin’ what he does best, no picks needed. And Ethan, our drummer boy had been good friends of Vicious’ since middle school. So when our old drummer quit he stepped in and blew me away. Couldn’t/wouldn’t ask for any one else to take his place on those skins.

Who and what would you say are The Sadists’ musical influences?

1970s punk/rock n roll. There’s something about that time, it was revolutionary. And I think now a revolution is what we need. As concerning the “who” I think we influence a lot from bands like The Dead Boys, or The Dolls. People have said The Damned, The Clash, The Ramones, I don’t think we necessarily sound like any of these bands but I do think we bring back what they had. Stage presents, style, and heart driven rock n roll.

Can you tell me a little about the new album?

This is our first album, recorded at Red Lantern Studios by Adam Becker. We added and revised some of the old songs off the old “Love Sick” EP to the album along with some new stuff. We’ll be releasing some tracks onto our Reverbnation and some can be found out YouTube but we’ll be releasing the full album in “solid” form. I think we don’t take enough time to enjoy whats physically reachable and in front of us anymore so if you want all of what we got, keep your eyes out for LPS, TAPES, and CDS. We’ll have ’em online or with us at shows.

Can you tell me The Sadists’ recent Cali tour w/ Bad Sex?

California was awesome! Bad Sex is awesome! If you don’t know ’em, put down your 40-year-old dad punk and go give ’em a listen. Do yourself a favor. Everyone was super rad! Great bands, great drugs, great venues.

Do you have any shows coming up?

Feb. 23rd at the Kenton Club with The Lovesores and The Viles.

Are there any plans to hit the road, next year?

Definitely. We like any excuse to get out of this place.

Is there anywhere you’d like to play that you haven’t played, yet?

We really want to hit the East Coast, we’ve heard nothing but good things. But there’s plenty of places we want to see, always new people to meet and rad spots to play. We wanna do it all. So send us your sugar daddies. Anything to get us on the road.
