The S/T full length from Falmouth synth punk project SPLIT FRICTION is the fifth installment in the MONITOR SHOCKS concept that we’ve been premiering here at 50thirdand3rd. Last month we premiered a video from this album called “Crushed Aeon (Closing On In)”, and now we’re able to bring you the SPLIT FRICTION full length in it’s entirety.

Inspired by James Tiptree Jr.’s short stories and the dystopian synth wave and electropunk of bands like TUBEWAY ARMY, FAD GADGET, and NERVOUS GENDER; SPLIT FRICTION is made entirely with synths and the vocal of Charlie Murphy (INTERNAL CREDIT, FREAK GENES).

Asked about the genesis of the synthy direction of the sound on this album, Murphy says he became downright obsessed with a synth his friend found in the trash:
“I used the synth that I was given by my good friend Sam, he found it in a skip and said he wasn’t using it so did I want to give a try. I became sort of obsessed with it and started using it for everything, it was really fun to try writing songs on something I had absolutely no idea to play, the element of surprise was there. It was getting to the stage where when I’d turn up to band practice, people would be like oh god not the synth haha. This is the first album I’ve ever made entirely on my own (apart from the mastering which Ben Nightingale did a great job with), so that was an interesting experience, It was pretty immersive doing that way.”
