When Mr. Airplane Man went into the studio with Justin Hubbard (Germ House / Far Corners) at the helm last summer, they’d been back playing for a couple of years and were really beginning to sound as confident as ever. They’d been gigging and recording regularly, including a European Tour with The Gories and US dates with Reigning Sound. Last Fall a new Greg Cartwright-produced, slow burner surfaced called “Over That Hill”, which appeared on The Wild Angels compilation. And in May 2017, a career spanning compilation called Bits & Pieces was released.
When I had gotten word Mr. Airplane Man were going to record with Hubbard, I asked them if they’d consider doing something on the Oblivians-end of their sonic spectrum, and they were enthusiastic about that idea, and had just the song in mind with ‘Never Break’. In the sweltering dog-days of summer 2016, Margaret and Tara hunkered down in their practice space with Hubbard to record live on a 4 track to cassette, and then they overdubbed the vocals. The guitars are nice and dirty, Tara pummels out a beat that both swings and hits hard (and she adds a nice layer of organ too), and Margaret delivers a howling and inspired vocal with plenty of swagger to spare. Hopefully this tune might wet their fans whistles while they ready their new album, which is already in the can, and was produced and engineered by Robin Girod (Bandit Voyage) and James Finch (Earth Girl Helen Brown).
‘Never Break’, is set to appear on the upcoming ‘Neon Maniacs‘ compilation. ‘Neon Maniacs‘ is a split label release between the Girlsville imprint out of Chicago, and the Falmouth, UK label Nerve Centre Records. It will be released in the US and the UK on October 14th as part of International Cassette Store Day.
Mr. Airplane Man are currently on a East Coast tour that is set to take them up through Canada for the first time in some years! And when Mr. Airplane Man are in town you suit up, show up, and go shake that ass!!
