New Spirit of the Otherworld – PVT Are Heading Home

Sydney electronic gurus PVT have endured quite a year of plaudits since the release of their fifth album ‘New Spirit’ early in 2017. The band, kicking off a stellar career in the late-nineties under the name Pivot, have steadily increased their level of sophistication over the past two decades, running the gamut from math rock to a Krautrock inspired electronica and everything in between.

The much anticipated release of ‘New Spirit’ (released on Los Angeles’ Felte label) in February of this year has this time seen the group -brothers Richard and Laurence Pike, and Western Australian Dave Miller- shift a slightly inward direction, opting for a more moody, sparse and minimalist soundscape befitting of the most perfect underwater soft-focus dream sequence that could possibly nestle within the cushiony warmth of the mind’s eye. For it is exactly that pleasure -warmth- that ‘New Spirit’ will bestow unto you.

“After nearly 20 years and five albums of innovative electronica, PVT must come close to qualifying as a Great Australian Band. Longevity has not dulled them, with New Spirit a restrained, economical, mournful triumph… a futuristic kind of Australian gothic, an idea that sums up the whole of this hypnotic record.”

4 Stars – Rolling Stone

Now, off the back of a recent successful European tour, the electronic pioneers are gearing up for a handful of intimate Australian shows; the first in their homeland since the February release of ‘New Spirit’. The experienced campaigners are sure to dazzle too, with no shortage of excellent new material to choose from. ‘New Spirit’ tracks like ‘Morning Mist, Rock Island Bend’ and the moodily dark closer ‘Murder Mall’ are atmospheric wanderlusts that seamlessly delve into the inner-psyche, at times uninvited. ‘Murder Mall’ itself has a final refrain that emits the unexpected, dipping a sharp decline into a black hole of nothingness, leaving many an unanswered question scattered in its wake. This is a good thing, for it is not the job of the protagonist to spell everything out, is it?

“Overwhelming and utterly sublime… In time, It (New Spirit) could easily be considered the band’s best work.”

Joining PVT for both Sydney and Melbourne dates is the innovative electronic artist Nico Niquo whose In A Silent Way‘ album has fast become a target for album of the year lists worldwide. Also, a host of innovative local acts including Melbourne’s Corin, Dongelis (aka Sydney’s Donny Benet) plus Lower Spectrum and Erasers for the Perth shows.

With PVT bouncing off the energies that ‘New Spirit’ provides, and with the band in a constant state of evolution, it would be fair to say that these are shows not to be missed. Over the years, Sydney has struggled to produce a more consistent and adventurous band, nor one more capable on stage, and with the members choosing to spend their time living between London and Sydney, live appearances are few and far between. You know what you must do.

Do not miss this chance to catch one of Australia’s most singular and utterly revolutionary bands live!
