New Music Blast: IRON CHIC/TOYS THAT KILL Split LP

I love a good hook and Holy Hell! does this Iron Chic/Toys That Kill split LP ever deliver the goods.

The split is a team up of New York’s Dead Broke Rekerds and California’s Recess Records. The two bands have previous releases on Dead Broke and Recess, in fact Iron Chic bassist Mike Bruno is also the chief at Dead Broke and Toys That Kill frontman Todd Congelliere is the head honcho at Recess.

From the Iron Chic camp, the split features four tracks that were salvaged from their excellent 2017 full-length “You Can’t Stay Here“. If you dig huge, and I mean massive, sing-along choruses with heart pounding emotion you need some Iron Chic in your life. These guys out anthem Gaslight Anthem on practically every song. I can’t believe these tracks were left off “You Can’t Stay Here“, they should have just made it a 15 song album. “Kid Icarus” alone would be the best song on a lot of records and conveys that they are still reeling from the sudden death of founding guitarist Rob McAllister in 2016.

San Pedro, California’s Toys That Kill have been around since 2001, formed out of the ashes of DIY legends F.Y.P. and their 2012 album “Fambly 42” was one of my top listens that year. Toys are not as fun as F.Y.P. were, but hey eventually we all mature right? The band has been laying low since 2016’s “Sentimental Ward” and these five songs were slated for their new album. As expected there are more hooks here, although Toys have a tighter garage punk sound as compared to Iron Chic’s fists in the air punk. The five tracks here show Toys versatility with the blazing ’77 punk of the 45 second long “This Delegation” and “The Cut Up Boy”, the sneering garage punk of “So Tuf” and the almost emo “Where Have All The Kids Gone“.

All in all you’ve got 9 tracks of perfect punk rock to tease you until both Iron Chic and Toys That Kill release new albums.
