Meet….. Kalen & The Sky Thieves

As we get ready to spend time with family and friends here in the U.S.A, let’s take a little bit of time and give a listen to Kalen & The Sky Thieves. Most definitely there are some serious nods here to some of Classic Rocks greatest. It’s like Heart meets Portishead meets Zep and add in whoever you are picking up on, beautiful voice, nice melodies, pretty comes to mind as a single word to describe these tunes . So before these holidays pick up steam , put on some new music for your friends and family, play them some Kalen & The Sky Thieves.

Hi our name is…

KST = Kalen & The Sky Thieves

People say we sound like…..

KST: Many things, usually involving the word “rock.”

We are…

Kalen Lister, Wayan Zoey, Will Hanza and Jay Giacomazzo.

We are originally from…..

KST: All over the NE. We met in BK. We’ve all been in BK for over a decade.

Kalen: NH

Wayan: OR

Will: CT

Jay: NY

Who are some that have an influence on your sound?

Wayan: Roni Size, J Dilla, Jon Brion

Kalen: Keith Jarrett, Zepplin, Heart, Kate Bush, Portishead, Joan Armatrading,

Will: Hendrix, Floyd, Radiohead, Miles Davis

Jay: Deftones, The XX

The first time we all decided to get together and make some music…

KST: It was the result of one of our drummer’s nefarious schemes.

The following bit is taken from our bio:

Jay Giacomazzo, Will Hanza, and Wayan Zoey met as musical competitors. Despite being bested by Will and Jay, Wayan sought to turn the opposition in to a coalition and the three began jamming together purely for the enjoyment of playing with like-minded people. Concurrently, Kalen had reached out to Wayan in regards to providing the rhythmic drive behind her performances. A fortunate side-effect of Wayan’s tendency to overbook himself was the chance encounter between Kalen and the as-yet unnamed trio of instrumentalists. Following an abbreviated courtship, all four members of the band found themselves saying “It’s not you, it’s me” to their other long-term commitments so that the Sky Thieves could be born.

Will reflects on the first moments: Kalen and Wayan launched into ‘Fallen From the Sun’…my guitar and Jay’s bass found a space that fit like a glove. The immediate chemistry was undeniable.

Books we recommend …

Wayan: The Dirt – Motley Crue

Will: Hesse’s Siddhartha, Marquez’s 100 Years of Solitude and Eco’s Foucault’s Pendulum

Kalen: If On A Winter’s Night A Traveler, House of Spirits, Under Milkwood, Sammy Davis Jr. (Autobiography)

Wayan: This Is Your Brain On Music – Daniel Levitin, The Story Of B – Daniel Quinn, His Dark Materials trilogy – Philip Pullman

Jay: Catcher In The Rye

Can you tell us about the process you use, from writing the songs all the way through getting the album ready?

KST: Kalen brings in a song, frequently with a bassline already in mind. Wayan plays a different beat than Kalen intended, and Will adds his luxurious guitar all over everything, Jay makes Kalen’s bass lines funkier or does a lower counterpoint underneath and the bass line becomes more of a low-mid riff…

Our craziest gig ever was….

KST: Boston, City Hall: dancing children in red dresses and trick bike guys on one of the hottest days of the summer

If you could pick any time to travel back to for music, where would you go and what year would it be….

Wayan: Bristol, 1994

Will: Jazz eras. As far as this band goes, I teeter between 1970 (London & Cali) and 1992 (Seattle).

Kalen: I’m with Will, 1970s…

Growing up, at home we listened to…..

Kalen: Between all of us, probably everything! I grew up with my Mom’s vinyl in my ear – classic rock, jazz, soul and funk from the 60s and 70s.

What tunes are on heavy rotation for you…

KST: Butcher Brown, Banda Magda, Rubblebucket, White Denim, Now vs. Now, Greensky Bluegrass, Punch Brothers, Snarky Puppy, Lotus, Thelonius Monk, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Willie Nelson, Joywave, Minus The Bear, Chet Faker, The Neighbourhood, New Politics

When touring Pink Floyd and Jimi are on regular rotation.

If you could open for any band right now who would that be and why?

Kalen: London Souls, Yeah Yeah, Yeahs, Living Colour

Wayan: Foo Fighters, they’re playing the purest rock out there for a TON of people

Will: Radiohead, but I’d be scared since they are so fucking good. Robert Plant’s new band.

Jay: Bad Suns, No Doubt

If you could give any advise to the kids who are just picking up their 1st guitars or drum sets and want to be in a rock n roll band, what’s your advise?

Wayan: practice practice practice

Kalen: Experiment. Write what you want to hear. Be the best you, not someone else.

Will: Also to learn non-rock music. Find out as much as you can about jazz, classical, world, etc. Don’t be content with learning just 5 chords. Try to learn a lot of things by ear. Sing with your instrument to develop your own voice within it.

When you are touring and have some time off , where could we find you…

KST: Working approximately one million jobs.

Will: Down by a creek playing a banjolin or acoustic guitar.

Jay: Communing with dolphins.

Wayan: Telling people, “No.”

Kalen: “…with her feet on the ground and her head in the clouds.”

The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us…

Kalen: Turn the music louder.

Will: Lucid Dreaming.

Jay: We’re terribly good looking.

listen to their new album…
