Laying Down Some Heavy Psych …. Meet St. James & The Apostles

st james

St James & The Apostles have a new Album coming out 9/23/14, the music here will introduce you to the Band and once 9-23 arrives, we will put the new Album “Via Dolorosa ” up on 50thirdand3rd. If the band tells us their sound is hard to describe, we are going to roll with that and let you make up your own mind where you would file them. I like the Blues and Psych mixed with just about any and everything and this is all hitting me in the right places. Good stuff, give a listen, follow them on twitter and Facebook and tune in once the new Album rolls out. Overall I would say after listening to St James and The Apostles you come away with knowing your listening to a Band that is forging into new sounds, new combinations, and that’s a good thing.

Meet The Band

Hi our name is….
St. James & The Apostles

And our sound might be best described as….
Hard to describe

We are….
Jamie Mahon – guitar, vocals
Mike Kiker – organ, pianet, bass pedals
Jeff Castner – drums, percussion

We are originally from…..
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Who are some that have an influence on your sound??
We listen to so much different stuff between the 3 of us.
That would have to be a whole interview unto itself.

The first time we met was…..
July 31st, 2010 – Mike & Jamie played together in the final incarnation of Jamie’s previous band, The Three 4 Tens. It was as that band was ending that Jamie had the idea of doing a trio of guitar/organ/drums, and starting fresh with a new band name.
We were going to play our first show as “St. James & The Apostles” on that particular date, when the previous drummer backed out of the gig. Minutes after getting that call, I see a Facebook post by Jeff asking if anybody needs a drummer. I immediately call him up, and within 2 hours, he comes up to Philly to play the show, never hearing the songs before.

We knew we were going to be a Band when………
From the very first note. All 3 of us were beaming with excitement over the sound, and almost 4 years and 2 albums later, it’s still just as exciting as that first show, if not better.

Before starting the band we were employed as…….
Well, both before the band and currently would apply here:
Jamie runs a bar in Philly called the Green Rock Tavern.
Mike still works as a music teacher in between gigs.
Jeff works as a contractor.

Our craziest gig ever was….
That night that Jamie’s amp (a 1967 Gibson Dual Medalist) wasn’t working too well and he ended the set by smashing the amp in half and taking a couple of ceiling tiles with it.

The first song we wrote was…….
“St. James Infirmary” 😉

It’s about……
That song really sums up everything. Even though we didn’t write it, it’s had a tremendous effect on how we come up with our own tunes.

What tunes are you currently jamming to…
Jamie: To be dead honest, I actually really like the Lorde record right now.
Mike: As of late, I’ve been really digging Electric Citizen. Their record is amazing. Also, Black Mountain, Fuzz, and Pond are on heavy rotation in my car.
Jeff: I really like Alabama Shakes, Jack White, Every Time I Die, & I’ve been really digging into Conway Twitty lately.

When you’re touring and have some time off, where could we find you…
Like any good musician… thrift stores, record stores, or looking for the nearest arcade.

The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us…
This is what sweat sounds like.
