Johnny Angel Wendell – “New York Dolls”

Singer-songwriter Johnny Angel Wendell is a veteran of the Boston punk scene, having fronted both Thrills (later know as City Thrills) and Blackjacks. His single New York Dolls is a rockin’ yet affectionate ode to a legendary band that’s warm but never treacly. Johnny Angel Wendell’s lyrics capture the Dolls’ impact him and his friends and chronicle the band’s rise and fall. JAW, along with bassist John Carlucci and drummer Brock Avery evoke “Subway Train”, “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory” and “Personality Crisis” simultaneously while sounding fresh and original. JAW nails Johnny Thunders’ essence and does so judicially over a sprawling, Dylanesque ballad and on a side note, do I detect a hint of Anysley Dunbar on those drums? I get a slight David Bowie “Rebel Rebel” vibe on this. I digress. New York Dolls is available for purchase on Bandcamp.
