Girlsville Single Of The Year – Doechii feat Kodak Black – “What It Is (Block Boy)” (2023)

Doechii is a 25 year old rapper and singer from Tampa. She’s released a couple of EP’s and notched a Top 40 hit with “What It Is (Block Boy)” in 2023. Her first EP, Oh The Places You’ll Go (2020) was self funded and self released, at which point she was scooped up by Capitol Records where thus far she’s released the EP She / Her / Black Bitch (2022) while fans await her debut LP.

I know generally who the audience is for Girlsville, and I know I don’t need to coddle them and that they are curious and interested in good music. I also know that some were not listening to Slayyyter or Doechii, and that I might be introducing them to these artists, so I’m going to rewind it back a bit before we get to “What It Is”.

Let’s start with her self released breakout viral hit “Yucky Bucky Fruitcake”. It’s a statement of intent and a testament to her unique voice and versatility so you know who you’re dealing with. She changes her flow on a dime to encapsulate different eras in Hip Hop and it serves as an introduction to the artist herself.

The last few years there’s been a house music revival in the mainstream, whether it be Beyonce or Megan Thee Stallion, everyone had at least a house cut on their record. It was 1989 again. And I have loved every minute. Doechii’s hip house stomper put the competition to bed with “What’s Your Name?”

Doechii and Rico Nasty collab “Swamp Bitches” opens Doechii’s major label debut EP, and it is a beast of a cut. Rico Nasty also shines on this one. My only criticism is why come as soon as we switch to a major we’re immediately doing money and cars raps when on the self released debut she had verses like “When I get older I want the money and power so I can (Make it go away, make it go away)”?

I’m going to hold out for the debut LP to make a judgement call on whether or not I think Doechii is being muzzled or toning it down. I know when signing to a major they’re going to want a hit, and we’ll get to that in a minute.

Next we’ve got “Crazy” which is just as sick as “Swamp Bitches” with a hot instrumental and beat, and Doechii screaming the hook. And then “Trampoline” is a collob with Missy Elliot, David Guetta, BIA, and Afrojack where Doechii’s verse steals the show. We can assume Missy collaborating means she’s telling us this Doechii girl is not mid and she is really really hot.

In 2023 Doechii dropped “What It Is (Block Boy)” a fun throwback (early 2000’s r&b rap) which seemingly takes things back to the streets, and is also her telling Capitol Records I can write a hit, so don’t sweat me and let me do my thing. And it’s a great single. A twist on a theme as old as “He’s a Rebel” or “Out In The Streets” that also shows Doechii has some pipes on her, and like Missy, she’s going to add some r&b flavor to her records in between weird girl raps, screaming hooks and switching flows on a dime.

So that’s it folks, I’ve made my case for Girlsville Album Of The Year with Slayyyter Starfucker (Deluxe), and Single Of The Year with Doechii feat Kodak Black “What It Is (Block Boy)”

End the Gaza Genocide & Up the Punx.
