I’ve been knocking out a feature for each band on the new Girlsville comp My Head Is Like A Radio Set, and it’s a bit overwhelming, so I’m going to condense the next few artists into one post and will probably do this going forward.

Freak Genes is Andrew Anderson (Proto Idiot) and Charlie Murphy (Red Cords) This is a more experimental project for them, and lately they’ve been tinkering around with synths. The concept is that these are oddball songs that didn’t fit with either one of their other myriad projects, so they flesh them out together until they become Freak Genes songs. What transpires is some of their most inspired work. They work at a steady clip, and have three albums under their belts on Drunken Sailor Records and Alien Snatch. This is the second comp track they’ve contributed to Girlsville, after making an appearance on Our Voltage. I remember when they sent me their second record prior to finding a label home, I told them I’d pop it out on cassette if they didn’t get any bites. I’m glad they got bitten by one Drunken Sailor! I’m also grateful they contributed an A+ hit for this new comp with “You Knew What You Are Doing.”

Germ House are another band that is no stranger to a Girlsville comp, in fact moreso than almost any band, they set an aesthetic tone with their lo-fi hard jangle, with their off-kilter hooks that often devolve into a giant wall of guitar squall, and dare I say shredding, and it’s all captured with requisite analog tape grit. Germ House, as they have on two previous Girlsville comps (Neon Maniacs, Our Voltage), contributed two tracks that are the veritable anchor to My Head Is Like A Radio Set. Germ House have releases on Fuzzy Warble Cassettes, and Trouble in Mind Records.

SEABLITE PHOTO BY MD AGUILAR
Seablite are a San Francisco pop group who released an excellent album on one of our favorite labels, Emotional Response. They harken back to a simpler Y2K era of San Francisco indie pop, where you couldn’t throw a stone without hitting a show from bands like Aislers Set, Go Sailor, or The Fairways. As a former resident of San Francisco around this era, they fill me with a great sense of nostalgic pride. After the release of their debut, they shared this Stereolab cover on social media, and they were kind of enough to let us scoop it up for a proper release on our comp. FFO: Lush, The Softies, Heavenly, Shop Assistants
