Fuzz Rockin The Blues Duo….Meet, Heavy Flow

heavy flow

Really digging the Yardbird/Zep vibe going on here. I’m looking forward to hearing a whole lot more from Heavy Flow in the near future but for now play this song if you like good old fashioned no nonsense rock n roll….Let’s Meet…Heavy Flow

Hi our name is….

Heavy Flow

And our sound might be best described as….

Fuzz rock duo with a blues influence and a minimal setup. Kind of like Queens of the Stone Age meets The White Stripes

We are…

James Matheson – Guitar and Vocals

Matt Weisser – Drums and Vocals

We are originally from…..

Garwood, NJ

The first time we met was…..

We’re childhood friends who grew up down the street from each other. We’ve been hanging out since second grade.

We knew we were going to be a Band when………

We decided to pick up instruments and form a band with our friends Freshman year of high school. We all went to different high schools, so it was a good excuse to meet up outside of school. Many bands and years later, we formed Heavy Flow in 2011 after Matt came home from college.

Before starting the band we were employed as…….

We were broke college students.

Our craziest gig ever was….

We played a gig at a Portuguese restaurant in Carteret, NJ that the headlining “Swag Metal” band asked us to join. When we arrived, we quickly realized this place was not prepared to have bands play, as in there was no stage, tile floors, and families trying to enjoy their 30 dollar meals in peace. The wait staff was visibly distraught as the first band set up to play. It was loud, it was tightly-spaced, and it was certainly not the environment these families were looking for. But, a gig is a gig! We played well, even with a kid having to sit on the bass drum for every band to ensure it didn’t slide around haphazardly during sets.

The first song we wrote was…….

The first song we EVER wrote was back in 2004 for our first band, and it was called “People”. That band never played that song, because we never finished writing it. Flash forward 7 years, and Heavy Flow’s first song was written in a hot basement in 2011. This song, “Lemme Say” began the last few years of the heavy-blues-fuzz we still play today. Also, “People” has been re-written and reincarnated to become a heavier, faster Heavy Flow song.

It’s about……

“People” is about not feeling social, or socially accepted. The original version we wrote in 2004 sounded like a sadder version of the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s yet-to-be-released “Wet Sand”, and a later version sounded too much like ‘Show Me The Way” by Peter Frampton. The current version, while still lyrically the same, is way more exciting and upbeat.

“Lemme Say” is a song about communicating after a disagreement and not letting things get worse. It paved the way for the minimal approach we continue to use.

What we are currently listening to….

James – Beck’s “Morning Phase”, Spoon, and Jim Croce.

Matt – The Talking Heads’ “Stop Making Sense”, The Screaming Females, and the entire Led Zeppelin catalog.

A few albums we could never part with….

James – Searching For a Former Clarity by Against Me!, Farm by Dinosaur Jr., Queens of the Stone Age self titled album, Led Zeppelin II, The Who Live at the Isle of Wight, and Band of Gypsys.

Matt – Zeppelin – Houses of the Holy, Foo Fighters’ The Colour and the Shape, Radiohead’s OK Computer, Kings of Leon’s Youth and Young Manhood, and RHCP’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

For fun we like to…..

Other than play music, we enjoy long bouts of Monopoly, cheap crap at garage sales, Taco Bell happy hour, regular happy hour, Netflix original series’, and seeing shows, be them local or global acts.

The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us……

Our album was recorded direct to tape in an apartment in Bed Stuy by our friend Seth at Ghostload Sound. We had a really fun time making the album, and want that to come through on the tracks.

Expect from us in 2014….

Our debut EP release June 14 at the Rail House in Rahway, NJ. The EP will also be available at Heavy Flow Info . More shows in New Jersey, New York, and beyond to come.
