Today we begin a collaboration with Rice Is Nice. Rice Is Nice is an independent record label based in Sydney, Australia. The label aims to promote music that will last and stand the test of time and they have a lot of cool Bands that we will be hearing from over the next few months. We will start this off with, The Frowning Clouds. These guys look ,act and sing like they are having a good time. Their new Album “LEGALIZE EVERYTHING ” has that cool psych ,low key vibe all through it. Love the reverb and the vocals are killer. Remember my job isn’t that of a music critic, I’m a music junkie and The Frowning Clouds are hitting that sweet spot. I love how kids born way past the 60’s are picking up on some of the psych sounds and making it relevant to their Generation. Gives me hope and that’s about as much as anyone can ask for. My advice is to listen to The Frowning Clouds, be that kid in school who dares to dig kick ass music that isn’t spoon fed to you by the Corporate Suits of big business and shitty music . Spend some time today and give The Frowning Clouds a listen, tell Mom and Dad or Mom or Dad ,your sick, stay home , stick on some headphones….
Meet The Band….
Hi our name is….
The Frowning Clouds
People say we sound like…..
The Monkees
We are….
Nick, Zak, Jake, Daff, Jaimie
We are originally from…..
Geelong, Australia
Who are some that have an influence on your sound??
A typical answer but we are influenced by a lot of stuff. The Frowning Clouds provides us with an outlet for the kinds of music that made us want to start a band, 60s stuff especially but not exclusively.
The first time we met one another ..
I met Daff at school around the age of 9. Music didnt come along till the start of high school. Sex Pistols, Ramones and the rest. We were also listening to dad rock like TREX and Led Zepplin and then the 60s garage bug bit us and we became extremely narrow minded for the next 5 years, but looking back on that I think it was a cool thing.
Books we recommend …
Childhoods End – Arthur C. Clarke, Switch Bitch – Roald Dahl, Breakfast of Champions – Kurt Vonnegut. The last few I have read and really enjoyed.
Can you tell us about the process you use, from writing the songs all the way through getting the album ready?
We don’t think about the album ever having a start point. Were constantly making songs and playing them together and to each other so there’s always songs around. Each album has been different but for the last our friend Stu came to our houses and recorded it over four days spread over a month. It was a quick and easy album and not to much thought went into it. Each song and overdub was done within a few takes and is all the better for it I think.
Our craziest gig ever was….
It would have to be when we played a brothel in Spain.
If you could pick any time to travel back to for music, where would you go and what year would it be….
Maybe Canterbury or Birmingham in England in the mid/late 60s. Between those two small cities alone there were bands like The Soft Machine/Kevin Ayers, Caravan, Matching Mole, Idle Race, The Move, ELO, Black Sabbath. That’s from a fanboy point of view though, I think Australia at the moment is great fun.
Growing up ,at home we listened to…..
I listened to what ever my dad listened to which was Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Iron Maiden etc. He also would be jamming all the time with his friends in the wool shed (we lived on a farm), his band was called Barbwire Bouquet, what a name!
What tunes are on heavy rotation for you…
Lately The Nazz, Dark, Luv Machine (especially the song Everything) , Kevin Ayers, Hawkwind, Sunforest, Chrome, Randy Holden, Nillson, early Pentagram and friends recordings.
If you could open for any Band right now who would that be and why?
Sabbath cause we could play in a stadium.
If you could give any advise to the kids who are just picking up their 1st guitars or drum sets and want to be in a rock n roll band , what’s your advise?
Don’t let the bastards get you down.
When you are touring and have some time off , where could we find you..,.,
Going out for dinner or playing tunes together, no time for time off!
The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us
This is the first band we ever started when we were 15 and 16 and dont take it to seriously.
