Record of the Day: DEHD – “Horses”

Chicago trio DEHD‘s debut LP contains their first two cassette EPs, (“s/t” 2015 & “Fire of Love” 2016) together on one impressively beautiful record. This LP is limited to 500 copies on colored wax and is a co-release with Maximum Pelt and Shuga Records.

Horses” is the lead single from the release with its pop minimalist sound not unlike New Zealand’s “Dunedin Sound”. Featuring bands like The Clean and The Chills the sound was characterized by jangly guitars, lo-fi production and Velvet Underground twinges. This is a starting point for DEHD for sure, but “Horses“, to my ear also has a definitive gothic shoegaze overtone.

The jangly mournful reverb soaked guitar leads off with echoing drums and rumbling bass while the murmur of Jason Balla’s voice is suddenly supplanted by the crystal clear siren of Emily Kempf.
