This is a follow up to my piece on Latin Freestyle, which has not had a proper comeback or resurgence & I think that it’s a genre whose influence is ripe for the picking.
Growing up in the Chicago radio market there was another style of music that was popular on commercial FM radio right next to Michael Jackson, and that was Chicago House Music, and more specifically (for this piece), Hip House.
Hip House combined the uptempo bass thump of House Music combined with Hip Hop rhymes and influences, and sometimes breaks alongside 4/4 house rhythms.
It never occurred to me that these records weren’t playing nationally. They played in a few urban markets, and I think I vaguely knew it was also popping in the UK.
In fact the UK really are the ones who embraced the Chicago House sound and who brought our Chicago artists over and treated them like rock stars on Top Of The Pops, while they sometimes toiled away in semi-obscurity at home.
I’ll include some universally agreed upon all timers of the genre, but also some cuts you might not see on every other list.
I’m also going to include recent examples of Hip House, because unlike Freestyle, House and Hip House have resurfaced.
