I bought Comateens first s/t LP solely based on how cool the band looked and the fact they did a cover of David Bowie and the Munsters Theme so I figured it’d be a good time. I would later find out they had a connection to another great band called Nastyfacts, through one of Comateens founding members, Ramona Jan.
Comateens run the gamut from New Wave to early 80’s dance, pop, and funk that was playing at places like Danceteria. They started in 76 with Ramona Jan still in the band. The version of the band on “Nightmare” is Lyn Bird, and brothers Oliver and Nic North. Sadly Oliver died of a complications from a drug overdose in’87. I’d say Comateens bridged the gap between the sort of Max’s Kansas City rock n roll scene onto the Danceteria dance/pop scene that birthed Madonna. However the first Nastyfacts single was more glitter/powerpop influenced than the later dancier stuff. And as stated Ramona Jan produced the excellent and highly sought after Nastyfacts single which is pure power pop / punk. Anyways this here track is a solid New Waver from the first Comateens LP and it’s the 50thirdand3rd Record of the Day.
