It’s funny when someone describes music as sounding like summer. Not only is it kind of weird to put an expiration date on something that can be enjoyed all year round, but what does summer sound like anyway? It could be the care-free subject matter of vocals or maybe the driving beat behind an ear-worm melody? Whatever the definition, Shake You and it’s B-side Make It By from Coastal Club, is the perfect example of the sound of summer.
“Shake You” kicks things off with a plucky clean guitar riff slowly building before eventually leading up to the most infectious hook of the year. Sounding like Vampire Weekend meets Walk The Moon, “Shake You” will be stuck in your head for all eternity. The flipside “Make It By” is equally as catchy but with a little more emphasis on songwriting. This is where Coastal Club really excel when it comes to composition. It’s remarkable how a song can be this fun and still express a personal feeling as it does.
I don’t really know much about Coastal Club other than the brief description of themselves on their website. It basically says they’re a group of friends who wanted to make fun pop music. Plain, simple, and effective. Not only have they achieved that goal, but they have completely nailed it!
Of course, this 7″ comes from the guys at Soul Step Records. Just about half of my coverage here at 50Thirdand3rd has come from this Ohio label. As a vinyl-only business, you would think their roster would be very niche and focused. But this year has seen releases from just about every genre. From Soul to Synth Pop and everything in between! And just like every other release from Soul Step, Shake You/Make It By has been pressed in a very limited quantity. Making it a stellar addition to your 45 collection but a nice collector’s item as well. Don’t sleep on this release. Even as autumn draws near, dropping the needle on Coastal Club means it can be summer during every season.
