one of my favorite things about doing these post for Gonerfest every year , is the fact that I get the chance to discover new bands that simply rock your face off. Oh Boland , hail from Tuam Ireland and play “Rural Irish kitchen sink bottle fed rock n roll.” To me it’s jangy guitar garage which ought to be played at max volume for full mind splitting sonic potential to make you move and groove. Oh Boland are yet another great reason to get yourself to Memphis for this years Gonerfest , just think of the fun you’ll have jumping up and down to these tracks , fun stuff and for sure, I consider myself a fan of Oh Boland after getting this post ready…
Oh Boland’s debut album ‘Spilt Milk’ is to be released on Californian label Volar Records this coming October. You can pre-order it on limited edition clear vinyl , follow link on this track ‘Jane Russell” off of that upcoming album…
Oh Boland be will be doing a three week tour in Sep/Oct around Gonerfest with dates TBA, so stay tuned in to their social sites for those dates…
Meet – Oh Boland
For those unfamiliar with your bands history, can you tell us all how you all met up and decided to start a band?
We started around 4 years ago. I’d thrown away a degree and was spending my time working in my father’s bar back home watching crusty old men sell sheep all day. I’d known Simon(Drums) and Eanna (Bass) since school and when their band broke up I approached them with some songs I’d worked up in my room and we started playing in Simon’s garage for fun, mostly as a Sunday morning hangover cure. Our friend David Boland (hence the name) booked our first show and that’s more or less it!
Who would you list as your musical influence? Big Star, Television Personalities, The Clean, Exploding Hearts, Replacements, Go Betweens, Flying Nun stuff, 60’s pop music, Irish Punk…anything poppy but sloppy…
whats the coolest thing that’s happened to you as a band since you started up?
I don’t know, I guess playing with some absurdly cool bands or bands we would’ve listened to for years and never have expected to see let alone play with. Playing with legends like The Sonics and Paul Collins from The Nerves was insane and more modern groups like Sheer Mag who I never thought would come to our humble island!
How excited where you when you found out you are going to play at Gonerfest?
I was floored to say the least! Being a fan of so many bands that have been on or involved with Goner or Gonerfest, it’s an absolute honour. Really looking forward to our show!
Who or what are you looking forward to while you’re in Memphis for Gonerfest.
From what we’ve heard from friends who’ve been there it’s gonna be a great party. Looking forward to hanging out around Memphis, seeing the shows… too many bands too mention but catching Reigning Sound live is gonna be special.. Time Bomb High Schools one of my favorite records of all time so can’t wait for that!
What are some of your favorite albums from the past few years?
5 solid ones at random…..
Melbourne Florida- Dick Diver
Sheer Mag EP- Sheer Mag
Terry HQ- Terry
The Magic- Deerhoof
S/T- Radioactivity
Do you see any real use for social media, or is it all just a pain in the ass to keep with?
That’s a pretty divisive topic in the group. I don’t know, personally it’s a pain in the ass to keep on top of things sometimes, but I guess if it’s getting people into your music that’s okay too. I try not to think about it…..it sometimes feel like a distraction…I guess you gotta be conscious of getting too obsessive about it…the best promotion is to go out and play shows!
Do you pay attention to reviews or comments from people about your music or do you just turn that noise off.
We’re addicted to hate…..
If you could tour anywhere in the world, where would you want to go.
All of my favorite bands over the last few years seem to be coming out of Australia so yeah, would love to play there! Melbourne maybe!
Can music save the mortal soul or is just a good backbeat to your life.
It cures hangovers at least….
Any last thoughts for your fans?
Bono wrote Mystery Girl.
some great tunes…
