Black Death came to be in Cleveland, Ohio around 1979 and are known as the “first all-African-American heavy metal band”. They released one record in 1984 on Auburn Records, and it’s currently selling for as much as $450 on Discogs!
Hells Headbangers to the rescue! The underground metal label/distributor has re-released the classic debut record on CD and vinyl and let me tell you, this record still kicks MAJOR ASS!
The band consisted of lead vocalist/guitarist Siki Spacek, guitarist Greg Hicks, bassist Darrell Harris and Phil Bullard on drums and the debut is a raw example of the NWOBHM style mixed with a punk energy, like Motörhead playing MC5 covers. After the 1984 release, Black Death quietly faded before resurfacing in 2009. Sadly Bullard had passed away in 2008.
Black Death is still going with a new all-star lineup consisting of original member Greg Hicks (bass), Ken Phillips (lead guitar), Dennis Fuldauer (drums), Sandy Krueger (vocals), and Mark Shea (guitar), they are possibly working on a new EP.
