‘She Don’t Want a Man’ by Shanda & The Howlers
A few weeks ago I put up a post explaining what I look for in a label. Rum Bar Records is on my short list of coolest labels on the planet. I once told Lou that he only signed total bad-asses and if his gang was walking down a dark alley itching for a fight 99.9% of all other label gangs would run. This is rock ‘n’ roll gang , dig it.
from Shanda & The Howlers
“She Don’t Want a Man” is a song we wrote around the bass line and a double-time Motown influenced drum beat. We brought it to rehearsal bare-boned and added the guitar and sax lines, which finished off the composition in five minutes, it was one of the fastest songs we ever wrote! Most of the tune is only two chords so the groove had to be solid and catchy. Early 1960s Detroit was without a doubt the main influence, along with lyrical story line of a girl getting hassled at a bar, who just wants to be alone. It’s one of our favorites to play live and we end many sets with it.
Shanda & The Howlers is a Rhythm & Blues revivalist band from Las Vegas, NV playing 50s-60s influenced R&B, Blues, & Soul
reminiscent of the Stax Sound. Influences in their sound can be traced to such artists as Big Maybelle, Ruth Brown, Otis Redding, The Crystals, LaVern Baker, and James Brown.
In the bands’ short history, they have played on bills with such legendary acts as The Blasters, Wanda Jackson and Rev. Horton Heat. Their debut album “Trouble” delivers 11 soul seared songs that speak directly of breakups, heartaches and moving on after surviving both.
Lead singer Shanda Cisneros’ raw vocals seem to claw their way through your speakers as the band locks tight behind her with gritty saxophone riffs, a Motown inspired rhythm section and the occasional slide guitar.
