John Grant – Pale Green Ghosts
To be honest I had never heard of John Grant. Yet, Pale Green Ghosts is his second solo record, following his critically acclaimed album Queen of Denmark in 2010. There was a small part of me that remembers hearing about his previous band The Czars, who put out 5 records from 1997 -2006 before calling it quits. Although I can’t say I was familiar with The Czars music. I will be now.
It was one of those “check out the song of the day” emails that I usually don’t bother with, but the accompanying photo of the cover of Pale Green Ghosts intrigued me enough to click on the link. I’m glad I did. It’s a strange, but interesting record; certainly original lyrically – with Grant sounding like he’s reading straight from his own daily thought journal. Pale Green Ghosts is also very difficult to categorize musically, I hear a bit of Nick Cave, David Bowie, and maybe even The Flaming Lips. Regardless, for some reason I haven’t been able to stop listening. Check it out.
