Two years in the making, hundreds of rewrites, Fairytale Of New York by The Pogues was released in November of 1987 and has become and enduring holiday classic. It’s certainly my favorite.
The story of two wrecked down and outs reminiscing at Christmas about what was and what could’ve been, the song is hopeful, melancholic and disheveled as only The Pogues could write. It’s perfect for the season when most of us look back and hope that the next year will be a little bit better.
RIP Kirtsy MacColl.
