Starting off October with Breanna Barbara and holy wow , this is super over the top cool. I’ve listened to ‘Mirage Dreams’ on steady repeat now for a little over a week and with each listen , I find more to love about it. I don’t think it’s a crazy coincidence that Breanna , list a few of my favorite artists below, because the second I heard her sing, I was hooked , my gut reaction was to think of Mr Airplane Man and we all know how big a fan I am of theirs but Breanna isn’t just offering up a newer version of them , it’s way more subtle than that. The influences range but what comes out is a new voice that I can’t get enough of. I strongly urge all you truly hip kids to give Breanna a listen…
Meet – Breanna Barbara
for those unfamiliar with your history, can you tell us you decided to give this whole music thing a shot?
I had moved to New York to study theater at an acting conservatory. I had always written songs and played some shows but never focused on it very much. It wasn’t until I wasn’t getting much work as an actor that I found myself going home and writing more and more songs in my bedroom. Eventually that became more of my life than theater/films did. One day I took a shot in the dark and sent my demos to a producer I had admired for awhile named Andrija Tokic. We started chatting and decided to make a record together- hence Mirage Dreams being born.
who would you list as your musical influence?.
Oof. Too many to name. Bessie Smith, Aaliyah, Melanie, Link Wray, The Ventures, Junior Kimbrough, Jesse Mae Hemphill, Wanda Jackson, Holly Golightly, Billy Childish, the list goes on and on…
whats the coolest thing that’s happened to you as a band since you started up?
We got invited to tour Scandinavia next summer 2017! I’m real excited about that.
what are your hopes and dreams as a band for the next few years.
I would love to keep evolving as a songwriter, learn more instruments, keep touring and traveling the world and meeting good people.
what are some of your favorite albums from the past few years?
Angel Olsen- My Woman/ Burn Your Fire for No Witness
Exploded View – self titled
The Mystery Lights – self titled
The Frightners – Nothing More to Say
Mr. Airplane Man- Lost Tapes
Natural Child – Okey Dokey… soo groovy
Do you see any real use for social media , or is it all just a pain in the ass to keep with?
Social media is a beast. It is definitely a powerful tool but I try not to take it too seriously. What kills me is having my eyes on so many screens! I swear I can feel it dwindling my vision.
Do you pay attention to reviews or comments from people about your music or do you just turn that noise off.
I am my own worst critic so everything that’s come out so far has been shockingly positive. I was really intimidated to release that first video I did, and it’s not like a ton of people have seen it, so maybe the negativity has yet to come haha, but mostly I was really surprised at the positivity the record/ songs have gotten. So I think in this beginning part it I was more so paying attention out of genuine curiosity but now that the record has been out a couple months I find myself tuning out a bit.
If you could tour anywhere in the world , where would you want to go.
Can music save the mortal soul or is just a good backbeat to your life.
Music has 100% undeniably saved my soul. It unearths some things out of me I’d never be able to get out otherwise.
Any last thoughts for your fans?
Thank you for taking the time to listen to my songs. Lets grab a drink sometime <3
