Video Of The Day – THE MONKEES and FRANK ZAPPA 50 Years Ago…

‘Last Train To Clarksville’ by THE MONKEES

THE MONKEES started as a TV-show/soap about an imaginary band that wanted to be
The Beatles. The four actors were musicians and contributed partly to the songs aired on
the series (1966-1968), but didn’t really wrote the tracks or didn’t play on all recordings. Anyway, the band was credited for a string of truly sticky pop songs which you still can
hear on traditional radio stations around the world and John Lennon claimed on a few
occasions that he digged those catchy American clowns. Regardless your age I’m quite
sure all you music junkies out there know at least one Monkees song. Maybe this one
LAST TRAIN TO CLARKSVILLE – a big cracker that went No 1 on the US singles
chart 50 years ago today – on 5 November 1966. Here’s some memorable nostalgia…

What, maybe, not anybody out there knows is that besides Lennon, eccentric genius FRANK ZAPPA had a weird admiration for those comic dudes. Many sources (including FBI & CIA) claim he played on many of The Monkees‘ hits as a studio musician. Of course we all know that FBI and CIA are not reliable informants at all, but just as Lennon (chased by the Feds), also Zappa supported the band in public AND he even made a hilarious appearance in one
of the series’ episodes. Now that is a FACT. Here’s some crazy history…
