When The Exploding Hearts ceased to exist in 2003 because of a terrible car crash that took the lives of three band members, I remember not only being shocked but also thinking that there was no way another act could possibly equal the perfect powerpop/punk, energy infused music that had just died with the band.
I was wrong. Just recently I discovered “The CRY!” and the similarities are striking. Both bands are from Portland, OR and are almost the exact same ages (21-22). But the biggest similarity is the music, and I mean that as the highest compliment possible. The CRY! crash through the 2 minute pop song like they were 20 year vets and the energy is just contagious. I don’t consider this music “retro” but the band takes the best elements of pop, punk and garage and make it their own. The band released “Discotheque” on 7” vinyl in February 2013 and in August of this year the band finished producing the follow up 10 track album, hopefully out by January 2014.
Here’s to hoping they have much more music to come.
