THE BYRDS ! No 1 in UK – 50 Years Ago…

Time flies with the speed of an unstoppable turbojet-powered supersonic jet ! Incredible, 50 years ago today (July 24) The Byrds took the number 1 spot in the UK with their brilliant jingle jangle (with McGuinn on a 12-string Rickenbacker guitar) cover of the Bob Dylan composed ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ song. It was also No 1 in the US a month earlier and it became the title-track of The Byrds’ debut single. Dylan’s original version (five-and-a-half minutes long) appeared on his 1965 album ‘Bringing It All Back Home.’

Dylan‘s original version (five-and-a-half minutes long) appeared on his 1965 album ‘Bringing It All Back Home.’ . He sings the song in four verses, of which The Byrds used only the second for their recording. Interpretations of the lyrics have included a paean to drugs such as LSD, a call to the singer’s Muse, a reflection of the audience’s demands on the singer and religious interpretations. The man doesn’t care about the bla bla bla on his work. He just plays songs for us…
