One of many things that I have always appreciated about Goner Records is that you never quite know what to expect when you give a 1st listen to a band that they are putting out a record with or a 1st listen from the Bands that are playing the coolest of all festivals..Gonerfest. Salad Boys put out some cool tunes ,sweet psych vibe throughout , looks like they have a new album coming out soon that once it is out , I’ll put it up here…. good stuff, give a listen…go to Gonerfest, visit Goner Records for the best bands on the planet…
Can you give us a little history of the band….
Yes, we started about three years ago in Christchurch as a side project for our other more important projects. Quickly those other projects became less important and the Salad Boys hit the road and blew up New Zealand. “Blew up” is a little exaggerated but we did gain some notoriety for our notoriously sensational live shows, plus our self-released 8 song demo cassette did the rounds a few times on the World Wide. A tour of Australia and a bunch of lucky support and festival slots later, we found ourselves legally/lovingly tethered to United States of American label Trouble In Mind. Soon after that our debut full length Metalmania was pressed to vinyl (a rare and expensive thing for a New Zealand band) and we’re bound for our first trip to the USA in September and October.
Bands that you are influenced by…..
Salad Boys appear to be channelling/imitating Wire, The Gun Club, Jay Reatard, The Soft Boys, R.E.M., The Clean, Pavement, The Smashing Pumpkins, Sparklehorse, The Feelies, Can, The dB’s, David Bowie, The Chills, Television and Television Personalities.
Do you stop by roadside attractions if you see it on a billboard while on the road? If so what have you seen?
Usually the only billboards in New Zealand are dark and gruesome images promoting safe driving. Any roadside attractions considering promoting themselves on a billboard would likely be discouraged by the price.
Craziest story you can tell us about touring ….
James Sullivan’s sixty-five minute shower in Sydney, 2014. Other than that I thought it was crazy that we could still manage being polite to each other after three weeks together in confinement.
What Albums did you have on steady rotation in High School.
Marcy Playground – Shapeshifter, The White Stripes – anything, R.E.M. – anything, David Bowie – Aladdin Sane, Franz Ferdinand – S/T, Queens of The Stone Age – Songs For The Deaf, Crowded House – Together Alone, Smashing Pumpkins – anything.
What are you looking forward to the most when you think about Gonerfest 12….
Having absolutely no idea what to expect. Hopefully meeting some like minded souls, playing a good show and watching some interesting bands also having great shows.
Who are some of your favorite new Bands ….
Maybe not new bands but new releases by Ariel Pink, Beach House, St. Vincent, X-Ray Charles, Neil Young, Brian Eno, Anto Pascoe, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Dance Asthmatics…
Bands plans for the rest of 2015/2016
Touring the USA and beginning work on our next album this year, more touring Australia and maybe Europe and USA again next year, plus of course as many new releases as quality permits.
