  • Happy Birthday Steve Miller / today 70 ! / Steven H. ‘Steve’ Miller was born in Milwaukee on Oct. 5, 1943 / when he started his ‘professional’ career he became one of the top San Francisco psychedelic blues-rockers in the late’60s and early ’70s, afterwards he evolved to one of the top-selling rock acts of the mid- to late ’70s and early ’80s / 18 studio albums, 3 live records, 7 compilation albums and 30 singles (see full biography & discography links at the bottom) ….

We all know the big million selling hits, so to celebrate Miller’s birthday I chose for his less know but very creative ‘psychedelic blues’ years (1968-1970)… his first recordings with ‘The Steve Miller (Blues) Band’, his ‘why is my band changing with every new album?’ years, his ‘Boz Scaggs & I’m not the only songwriter’ years, his ‘poor’ years…The SMB released 5 albums in that period (5 albums in 3 years! Take that… you lazy millionaire artists of the last two decades). Here’s one track of each album…

1/ ‘In My First Mind’ – from 1968 debut album ‘Children of the Future’ – one of the few songs Steve Miller has written for this album…

2/ ‘Livin’ in the U.S.A.’ – from 1968 album ‘Sailor’ written by Steve Miller…

3/ ‘Celebration Day’ – from 1969 album ‘Brave New World’ – written by Steve Miller and Ben Sidran ( a -much in demand session musician at the time) – featuring Paul McCartney on backing vocals, drums and bass guitar credited as Paul Ramon…

4/ ‘Little Girl’ – from 1969 album ‘Saving Grace’ – written by Steve Miller…

5/ ‘The Industrial Military Complex Blues’ – from 1970 album ‘Number 5’ – written by Steve Miller…

… well, eh… the Man’s birthday party just got started… I can’t resist… so here’s 2 of his all time post-blues-years-classics… MOR rock? AOR Rock? Whatever… I’m a sucker for these brilliant crafted ROCK songs…

1/ ‘Rock ‘n Me’ (you know the words…)

    2/ ‘Swingtown’ (that bass…)
