Another cool band from Soundflat Records, The Gentleman Agreements are the kind of band that I hope to find after hours of surfing online for bands around the world that I need to listen to. I love all things Mod and freakbeat and this fits right in there with the best of today’s take on some timeless vibes. So listen away, and remember, if you’re not having fun or changing the world, what’s the point….. and stay tuned in to 50thirdand3rd as soon as the new single from Soundflat Records is out, we will have it here for you to give a listen to…
Meet, The Gentleman Agreements
For those unfamiliar with your bands history, can you tell us all how you all met up and decided to start a band?
At the very beginning it was two french friends in Europe who had been playing in neo-sixties style bands, and wanted to form a party-friendly, so-called ‘freakbeat’ act to re-create the classic 1960s dancefloor and party sound, with friends of ours. So a rhythm section was born, then we asked other friends to join us (to perform gigs throughout Europe) and (eventually) make records. As Marco from Soundflat Records was already a friend, it was logical to ask him to produce our first single and LP … and that’s it:
Alexandre : drummer from the Booboos, Towerbrown etc ….
Paolo Negri : organist from Milan in Italy who works with a lot of bands, the most famous of which is the Link Quartet
Yann Cracker : guitarist from Firecracker and Towerbrown
Barnabe Street Weissmuller : from Sheetah & les Weissmuller, as our frontman and lead vocalist
And me from Penelope on bass and backing vocals.
Then another organist joined us, Denis who had also played in a lot of bands including [Mr Day and the Hawaii Men] and Vincent (aka Van Gogo, who made the painting for our LP) who replaced Yann on guitar, and had previously played with Les Arondes, Les Booboos and many other bands too.
Who would you list as your musical influence?
Very hard to tell because it’s soooooo large but I think.
Rupert’s people, The Creation, The Action, The Artwoods, Brian Auger, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, The Richard Kent Style, Les Problèmes, Ronnie Bird, Les Fleurs De Lys, The Who, The Small Faces, and many many many more bands…
What’s the coolest thing that’s happened to you as a band since you started up?
Hard to say, because every gig has had a part to play in making it all such fun! But I think when all the audience came on stage at the end of our last gig in Liege in Belgium, or maybe our first gig with our present organist Denis in Cologne. But I think this will be surpassed by something that may happen later this year, but « hush hush » 😉
What are your hopes and dreams as a band for the next few years?
Just continue to be ourselves and maybe do a new LP and other stuff.
We would like to play in Japan or the USA maybe if the album works there …. Why not indeed? 😉
What are some of your favorite albums from the past few years?
I think the High Learys, and the new Sheetah & Les Weissmuller were the best records for me over the past few years … but I have high hopes for the new Last Shadow Puppet album 😉 … and of course …. OUR LP on SOUNDFLAT RECORDS, AHAHAHAHAH !!!
Do you see any real use for social media, or is it all just a pain in the ass to keep-up with?
I think today it’s a way we’re forced to make music, but we are better on stage ….
Do you pay attention to reviews or comments from people about your music or do you just turn that noise off.
Yes and no because all the opinions were good, though the only thing that counts is that we are talked about. But if it’s in a good way it’s better for us 😉
If you could tour anywhere in the world , where would you want to go?
As I said .. Japan, USA, and … England of course, But everywhere could be great ! .
Can music save the mortal soul or is just a good backbeat to your life?
I think both … at the beginning it’s a way of life and then it can save some souls, but you need to be open-minded for that … Anyway, it’s also a backbeat to my life … and you know i’m an addict … yes vinyl and music were my addictions …
Any last thoughts for your fans?
Put on your dancin’ shoes and join us partying everywhere in the world … 😉
