Meet Søndags – Keepin’ The Summer Alive

Søndags is Norwegian for “Sunday” or a Danish short form for “solens dag” meaning “day of the sun”, so it would seem that Søndags is a perfect moniker for the lo-fi folky California surf sounds of Oakland duo Jonas (guitar) and Jason (vocals, drums).

It’s the middle of a brutal freakin’ winter where I sit so checking out the chill sounds of Søndags warms the soul a little. Think Dirty Beaches playing Shins tunes and you get close. One thing for sure, this is low-key listening.

The guys released a full-length in 2017, “Rotten Conches” along with a couple of singles and appear on the “Enter the Void, Vol. 2” compilation from Pennsylvanyia’s Donut Records.

Let’s find out a bit more.

Give us a short version of the bands’ history.
Jonas (guitar) and I -Jason(vocals) met at Merritt college in Oakland. Jonas had played in local punk bands growing up and kept pestering me to record something with him because he heard me messing around singing at soccer practice and I played him a few of my self recorded rap songs. I took him up on the offer and we started jamming. Once we started wanting to play shows I hit up Esau (guitar) who I used to skate/lurk with in high school and we took it from there. Esau ended up bringing his own little style to the picture and we like how it’s cooking

Tell us about your hometown scene and how the band fit into the scene…
The scene is cool, super supportive of small local bands. Once we decided we wanted to play shows, I spammed some venues and we’ve kinda just been getting hooked up from there

What inspires you lyrically….
My lyrics start as poems. I mainly just write when I have a feeling or a reaction to something I see that I need to express. From situations I’ve been in that have struck me emotionally to ideas that make me feel a certain way. It’s fun trying to translate a feeling into words and putting those words to a song that other people can feel and hopefully relate to. Writing/ making stuff is the only thing that makes me feel like my existence on this planet is halfway justified.

Describe your sound as a cocktail – what would it be called and what would be in it?
Mud Mutt medley
1 part ginger ale, 1 part liquid thc, 1/2 part red stripe beer cus Esau is half Jamaican and a couple shots of aquavit just in case we make it to Valhalla

If you could pick any time and place to travel back to for music, where would you go and what year would it be….?
The 800s in Scandinavia. Musicians and story tellers were the dudes back then and partied/feasted with the cheiftains. Or the 60s in sf or Woodstock ny because my dad has been drilling it into my head since infancy that those were the places to be

If you could tour with any band/artist right now who would that be and why?
Man the first thing that pops into my head are the Aussie bands that are killing it right now. Those dudes look like they have a lot of fun. Plus they’re in Australia and bring their surfboards on tour. Dumb Punts, Gooch Palms, Skegss, Pist Idiots. They’re killing it

Give us your 10 song playlist for the tour van/bus/plane?
Gather Round – Love
Planet Caravan – Black Sabbath
A Pair of Brown Eyes – The Pogues
Nightmares – Jay Reatard
Ramblin’ Round – Woody Guthrie
Moon Dawg – Beach Boys
Hey Baby (New Rising Sun) – Jimi
Pauvre De Nous-Massilia Sound System
We Get By – The Gooch Palms
99 Bottles – Pist Idiots

Give us two essential books to read.
Narcissus and Goldmund- Herman Hesse violently changed my life
The stranger – Camus or metamorphosis – Kafka because everyone needs a good existential crisis every now and then

When you’re not playing and have some time off, where could we find you…
An underground Guatemalan gambling ring pays Me & Jonas a hundred bucks a game to play soccer on the weekends so most likely either there or at the beach. Can’t tell you the exact beach though or else it’d blow up the spot. Jk, dm us for deets

What’s up for the rest of 2018
We’ve had a super fun 2017 gigging locally and down south. We’re just trying to keep gigging, keep making music and keep stoking the flames. We have a few local shows planned and some live radio recordings coming up. Plus we’re in the middle of recording our first real album in a real studio. Thanks for showing some interest in us we appreciate the support all the way.

Domestic now, but spent early to late 80s playing drums in a hair metal band in Toronto. Since then I've lost the hair and have found new ways to scratch the rock and roll itch.
