Every week, as usual, I check the gig schedule of the best indie venue in Belgium, the ‘Botanique’ in Brussels. It’s a big historical building surrounded by botanical gardens. Actually there are 3 venues in there (small – 700 cap. / smaller – 300 cap. / smallest – 200 cap.). Two weeks ago a very strange named band, called ‘Shovels and Rope’, drew my attention.
On their website I learned the following:” Shovels and Rope is a Charelston, South Carolina band consisting of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst. Formed in 2010, they sing harmony driven folk, rock and country songs using two old guitars, a kick drum, a snare, a few tambourines, harmonicas, and maybe a little keyboard sometimes. They tour constantly as a two piece, making as much noise as they can.”
Hmmm… that sounded cool. And then after listing to some of their music on the net I marked them as a ‘must see them’ act in my agenda. .
So, yesterday (Sunday, Nov. 17) they played the ‘smaller’ size venue. “Hey Michael and Carry Ann, as you were very impressed with the building and the cosy medium sized venue… here’s a picture of both”…
‘It’s like a big living room’ Cary Ann said, amused. It was their very first show in Belgium as part of their first small European tour. In America they already appeared on the Letterman Show but over here they are almost unknown. So only 87 people turned up (did my homework). It made it an intimate meeting with an enthousiastic band who enjoyed themselves as much as the audience did. They are indeed a two piece making noise, but quite a tremendous addictive noise. A compelling energetic mix of country and rock delivered with genuine passion. Their harmonies carry the songs and Cary Ann’s voice is simply astonishing. An impressive rockin’ country voice that turns into a tender instrument for their ballads.
And this is the music I chose and want to share after what I experienced yesterday…
