Record of the Day…So Long by Calgary James

BayCruise

We’ve always promised to transcend genres here at 50thirdand3rd so today I bring you the innovative stylings of Mr. Calgary James.

I’m not sure how to describe the music that this young man produces – Harry Nilsson meets Mac DeMarco and Ben Folds maybe…? A little bit of Billy Joel….I don’t know.

One thing’s for sure, like Nilsson, DeMarco, Joel, and Folds, Mr. James is protean in his musical approach and his EP “Bay Cruisin” manages to invoke the ghost of smooth 70s rock while experimenting with what some might call indie pop. Each song on the EP is quite different.

Whatever you want to call it, Calgary James should be mentioned in the same breath as Sufjan Stevens, Father John Misty, Mac Demarco and John Grant. Like these artists James is pushing the boundaries of popular music.

Domestic now, but spent early to late 80s playing drums in a hair metal band in Toronto. Since then I’ve lost the hair and have found new ways to scratch the rock and roll itch.
