Record of the Day: BODEGA – How Did This Happen?!

There is so much to love about “How Did This Happen?!” from Brooklyn art punks BODEGA. Starting with the fact that this is one of the catchiest damn songs I’ve heard. I mean that in every way; the opening bass, the jangling guitar, the sneering monotone vocals, the stand up drums, the shout along verse and of course the 360 degree video!

How Did This Happen ?!” practically forces you to dance. It’s the first song from their forthcoming debut album “Endless Scroll” due out this summer on What’s Your Rupture Records.. It was recorded and produced by Parquet Courts own Austin Brown on the same Tascam 388 tape machine used for “Light Up Gold”, so you might notice some similarities, but that’s ok.

Rousing and eccentric, the track brings home memories of the post-punk of the late 70s – early 80s, you know The Fall, Gang of Four, Wire…the trailblazers. The thing is, BODEGA are merely influenced by these bands, with “How Did This Happen?!” they more than play up to the level. Great songwriting is just that, great songwriting, and that’s what we have here. It’s perfect.

Can’t wait to hear more.

Domestic now, but spent early to late 80s playing drums in a hair metal band in Toronto. Since then I've lost the hair and have found new ways to scratch the rock and roll itch.
