The Raeletts were Ray Charles’ group of immensely talented backing singers, spanning decades and eventually including more than 20 different women as time went on. Many of the Raeletts went on to have successful singing careers on their own, including Mable John, Merry Clayton, and Minnie Riperton, among others.
In 1972, Tangerine Records released an album of The Raeletts doing songs on their own, without Ray, but produced by the man himself. It’s a total party record and shows that these ladies were all powerhouses in their own right. Check out two of my favorite cuts below, and don’t sleep on the album if you come across it.
