I suppose one of the advantages of being a little older is that I’m seeing my favorite music come back full circle. I still play The Small Faces and The Beatles and early Rolling Stones as if I was still 16 and hearing it all for the 1st time. This newest group of Mods and Rockers are really restoring my faith in the ability of rock ‘n’ roll to reinvent itself yet one more time. So listen to The Hypnotic Eye , they don’t need me to tell you how good they are. This is a band that is heading towards a bright future. After you have finished reading the interview , watch the video, listen to the songs and then go rush out and tell all your friends that 50thirdand3rd just did a really cool interview with this band called The Hypnotic Eye….
Hi, we are The Hypnotic Eye.
We are lead guitarist, Lindsay Murray, Vocalist Annie Bea, Oliver Tobin on Organ, Joseph Whitney-Fish bass guitar and drummer Cathal Kerrigan,.
And our sound might be best described as….
Psychedelic garage and fuzzy freakbeat.
The first time we met was…..
Lindsay: I guess we all met at different times. I’ve known Coz (Cathal) & Joey from being in and out of bands together around London and hanging out a lot. Ollie just came up to me at a show in Islington and just said I really want to be a part of this and I wouldn’t want to work with anyone else. Annie our singer I actually first caught doing backing vocals at a show at Mick Jones’ place last August. Within a month we were out gigging across Europe. It’s been great!
We are originally from….
We’re all from London. It’s an interesting ethic in London. It’s not the easiest place to live in and a lot of people lose faith here, but it’s been very good to me. There are always beautiful places to escape to and free you mind. One of those is right around the corner from us called ‘The Naked Ladies’ in Twickenham. Cozzy, Joey and I would hang out there, a club called Filthy McNasty’s put together by Legendary writer Terry Rawlings and various parties on Eel Pie Island.
We knew we were going to be a Band when……..
I’ve been really lucky with groups and songs. I’ve never ever had to search for either. In our scene it’s such a creative community. I had been offered some wonderful European dates after a song I wrote ended up on a Worldwide TV commercial and needed a new lineup. I was really lucky and I got my first choice for every instrument. As for knowing it was a ‘band’, that had to be playing the Paradiso in Amsterdam. Bowie played there man. Syd Barrett gigged there. That night was pretty spiritual. After that we all knew we were stuck with each other.
Before starting the band we were employed as…….
We’ve all actually always been in groups. Annie is a professional singer in her own right, Cozzy toured the World with Larrikin Love, Joey and I make films. Oliver gets paid to stand and smoke outside restaurants and clubs to keep up trade.
The first song we wrote was…….
There’s our first new lineup single, Strange Life. It’s a reaction to the incredible mid-60s Bowie singles on Pye. It’s about London Life.
What we are currently listening to….
This is absolutely fantastic! We heard about it through Miles Kane. No idea who put this together. It’s obviously a labour of love though. Various, Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na – Batman Theme
The Sudden Death of stars album is just fantastic & we’re good friends with Jacco Gardner so are anticipating his next one.
For fun we like to…..
We’re all pretty avid music collectors so having our ears to the ground takes us out to shows an awful lot.
The one thing we want you to remember while your listening to us……
None of our music has ever been tested on animals.
From us in 2014
We’ve JUST been announced for Berlin Psych Psych and have been hotly tipped for Eurosonic in Holland in a couple of weeks. We’re in the studio next week so it’s going to be a huge month for us. We are all craving making a new album. You’ve gotta watch this space and keep on our website. There’ll be a lot of visual content added over the coming weeks.
