Public Image Ltd. Hits Glastonbury – 2013

PIL

Formed around the lynch pin of John ‘Rotten’ Lydon, PIL have defined post-punk after the break up of the Sex Pistols. With a desire to be radical fuelling their every move, steady guitars with an edge of dub reggae form the setting for Lydon’s demanding voice, proclaiming and wailing his anarchic sentiments. Seminal album ‘Metal Box’ (1979) still is higly relevant and still sounds most exciting to my ears today. In 2012, 20 years after the ‘That Was Is Not’ LP, PIL released the much acclaimed new album ‘This is PIL’. This video contains 5 ‘hits’ they performed with a remarkable passionate energy at this year’s Glastonbury Festival in the UK…

1/ ‘This is not a love song’ – 00.00
2/ ‘One Drop’ – 06.40 (single from the new album)
3/ ‘Public Image’ – 12.25 (their first ever single)
4/ ‘Rise’ – 15.35
5/ ‘Open Up’ – 22.04 (‘Open Up’ actually is not a PIL song, but always part of their live-set. It was a ‘single’ collaboration by John Lydon & British electronic dance orientated band ‘Leftfield’ in 1993. ‘Burn Hollywood Burn’)

… and here’s my all time favourite PIL song: ‘Albatross’ (with Keith Levene ‘metallic guitar’, Jah Wobble ‘bass’ and drummer David Humphrey )… from the aforementioned experimental ‘Metal Box’ album…
